A few weeks ago, my husband and I went to see Aladdin. It was an uplifting flick. Last night we saw the movie, Dumbo. I was expecting it to be Mary Poppins fun. After all, with a flying elephant, how serious could it be? Pretty serious, from dark scenes to the bullying of little Dumbo, the movie was morose. Yes, Dumbo’s eyes were precious, and the computer-generated animals were amazing, but there was gloom hanging over the shoulder of each scene.
The Dumbo movie is like life: we have extraordinary powers, mass potential for joy, but when we wrap our gifts with darkness, despair hides around every corner. I wonder what it says about joy, when a supposed children’s story is steeped in somberness. Are adults so enamored with suffering that it flavors everything, even children’s stories?
One of my favorite thoughts is, “I am sincere, but not serious.” Seriousness seems to be a chronic state of adults. Maybe the state of affairs in our lives, our country, and our workplaces is serious; that’s exactly why we must live from the inside out. We must tune into the inner source of joy rather using outer events as reference points for our emotions.
This week, I spilled water in my purse, two days in a row. Each day I emptied the contents and dried everything out. I discovered that my water bottle can be threaded incorrectly when the top is tightened, even when it feels like there’s a solid connection. Now I know! There was no reason to get upset about my inconvenient circumstances. Life always has aggravations, and if we bow to them, we will be bent out of shape all the time.
It’s hard to be around people who are routinely upset, but it’s even tougher to be a person who is routinely upset. It takes courage to break that pattern, and that’s why EZosophy is practical. EZosophy offers a path of freedom from Ego Driven Suffering (EDS). Fear masquerades as upset about slight hassles. Emotional flares are red flags. They tell us where we need to work, because it’s not normal to get upset about every little thing. Now is always the time to give up hard attacks, to do our inner work, and to make life EZier and EZier, because when we do, we become the person we are meant to be!

Taking the Journey Without Distance
Do you remember the story of the princess and the pea? It’s about a prince’s search for a bride, but do the implications reach deeper than the surface story? As you may remember, the prince must marry a princess. He travels the world, dates several princesses, and doubts whether or not they are royalty, due to their imperfections. They are not shaped as he would want them to be, they are not as beautiful as he would have them, and their table manners lack polish. He returns home dejected.
One night there is a knocking on the castle door. When the door is opened, a young woman stands with wet, disheveled hair, drenched clothing, and water running from her shoes. She is escorted into the palace. She claims to be a princess. The queen tests her claims by placing 20 mattresses and 20 down comforters on the bed. Beneath the stacked bedding she places a pea. If the princess feels the pea, when she sleeps, she would be a true princess.
The next morning the queen asked the visitor if she slept well. “No. There was something hard in my bed that kept me awake though the night. I am black and blue all over. It was horrible.” Everyone rejoiced at the news and the prince celebrated his good fortune. He married the princess and we assume they lived happily after.
I would have thought that the prince might have had a courtship period to see if they were compatible, but, it is a fairy tale, which calls for suspension of belief. What might be a deeper meaning of the story? When the prince was most dejected and had given up hope, he returned home, and what he sought, turned up at home. Sounds like the story of the prodigal son, told in Luke. The prodigal son finds that what he always wanted was at home.
The same theme is reflected in the famous story, Acres of Diamonds, told by Russel H. Conwell. A man goes on a search for diamonds, only to find that there were diamonds on the land he owned. Unfortunately, the man sold his land to finance his journey to find diamonds.
These stories provide a pathway to life’s central journey. We search for our true identity, we search for our life’s purpose, and we search for meaning. The stories point to a grand truth: all these things are present, right under our nose. We do not have to travel or explore the world, because what we seek is present at home. Home is not a building; it is a state of consciousness. Home is the place where we feel comfortable in our skins. It’s the place where we can kick back and stop striving. Home is a place and a space in the heart, and home is where we belong.
There is no need to wonder or worry whether we are in the right place, since home is where the heart is. That means that wherever we are, our home is there. The home state of consciousness is entered when we are fully present in the now. It is present when we stop trying to improve who we are and rest in the discovery of who we already are. Our destiny is to be present, and until we are present, and until we roam the pathways of consciousness that rest in an eternal now, we will be dissatisfied. It’s a simple mission, and we are given a lifetime to complete it, and when we enter the journey without distance, our lives become EZier and EZier.

Healthy Responses to Unhealthy Situations
Everyone wants to be healthy, but no one wants to do the work. What is going on? It seems like we would be eager to take care of our bodies, but if that were so, there would be fewer sick people and more slim, robust bodies. We are amid a body crisis. Our bodies are suffering, our animals’ bodies are suffering, and our earth body is suffering.
We can take better care of ourselves, we can stop supporting animal agriculture, and we can do our part not to pollute mother earth, but we cannot control what others do. Maybe we can lobby for legislative action, maybe our actions will influence others, but ultimately people are freaking out about global warming. I read an article in Forbes that freaked me out, “The chance that there will be any permanent ice left in the Arctic after 2022 is essentially zero,” Anderson said, with 75 to 80 percent of permanent ice having melted already in the last 35 years. I posted the article on Facebook and got several shares and a few comments.
“A record number of Americans—73 percent—now understand that global warming is happening. About 62 percent of them know that humans are mostly responsible. What is bringing this change in understanding? Is it a generational shift? Or just a whole lot of bad weather?” This excerpt attests to the fact that global warming deniers are losing their ranks.
I had a therapist friend who was killed by a drunk driver. She wanted to start a group for people who suffered losses due to global warming and for those who were freaked out about the state of nature. She never had a chance to start her group, but it is needed now more than ever. My friendly search engine tells me that her dream is taking shape. There are environmental psychologists, like Renee Lertzman, who help people on the front lines of environmental activism, and who bring the malaise of impending environmental crisis into conversation.
The question remains: how do we deal with global problems that affect our lives, freak us out, and over which we have minimal control? What coping strategies are helpful?
- Act – While our personal habits may not make a tremendous impact, doing nothing supports a sense of helplessness and feeds immobilization. Whether it is recycling, upcycling, writing our representatives, or using less water, there are many actions we can personally take. And all action helps. Acting gives us a sense of purpose and mission. Inaction leads to resignation. It’s never time to resign from life until we take that last breath. But then, again, who knows at that point? The end might be the beginning of something else.
- Enjoy what we have – Most of our freak outs are about something that hasn’t happened, and not enjoying the life we have means we’ve sullied what we have with the fear that we will lose it.
- Join with others who share your values and concerns – Talk with them. When we share our concerns with others, our burdens lighten.
- Find what is ours to do – I wrote a column for several years that informed people of personal and collective action they could take to ameliorate climate change. That was my thing. Currently I put out a daily video on dealing with money, need, and greed. I feel that our fear about not having enough contributes to over-consuming. I hope my Facebook page and nightly videos are helpful in healing our need to overconsume and to over perform.
Let’s not pretend that our planet is not suffering from human caused disasters. Let’s address our fears, join with others, and act. There’s a gift in every situation, even the most devastating ones, so let’s see how we can survive and even thrive, when dire external circumstances stare us in the face.
