The Anne Report
Dear ,
We are on a wonderful 10-day journey. We spent seven days in South Llano River State Park, then went to Guadalupe State Park. We stopped our normal lives to read historical markers, swim daily, bike, hike, and climb hills to watch gorgeous sunsets.
Year before last we planned our great out west trip. We were gone for three weeks. We made lists, discussed plans, and talked about our trip daily before embarking. But this time, when I said, “Let’s go west,” we packed up and left. And it was a good thing too. We missed the flooding. Last check, things were soggy in our neighborhood, but okay. While planning is fine, I noticed how easy it was to make this trip happen. We packed a few things and we were off. No worry; no concerns. I used to think the content of my worry was supreme, but as I’ve aged, I’ve learned that worry is a habit that adds nothing. Worry is like putting a barbed wire around the neck. It makes for intensity but contributes no solutions. Life takes much less planning than I’d imagined, and a lot less luggage.
What an easy trip. I’ve learned, that if I stress a lot about traveling, the Universe keeps me home. There’s a reason I can’t go. “She’s distressed about traveling,” says the Ultimate. “Let’s just let her stay in the imagined safety of home.”
Traveling serves us. It lands us in the unfamiliar, teaches us to give up control, and asks us to trust -- It. At one time my resources and schedule didn’t allow me to go on long trips. There was a lake about 30 minutes from my home, and I would go there for a day. I’d wear my bathing suit, take a float, and a picnic. What fond memories. It satisfied my travel longing and took me far from my routine. At times I slept on my patio in Memphis. It was me and the stars, baby, and what fun we had. I’ve slept a few nights on our TX patio, but since I’ve seen snakes in our yard, outdoor sleeping has ceased. I think it was the snake in my mother’s bed story that got me.
There’s a saying about stopping to smell the roses, but in our society, we don’t even go outside! Roses be dammed. It’s outdoor blasphemy. If you haven’t been outside today, stop, go outside, and look to the sky, because I think it will add to your day. Okay, I’ll stop snooping. And, that’s it for the Anne Report.

The Great Longings
There’s a common saying that emerged from the Peggy Lee song, “Is
that all there is?” It points to a realization that living from
external urges and desires leave us dry and questioning. The
secular trinity of power, fame, and fortune promise satisfaction,
but those who obtain those goals know that they aren’t the main
course of living. They are the dessert, at best. And we all know
about desserts: they give us a rush, then let us down, and leave
us hungrier for more. Surface longings, whose fulfillment
guarantees the glitter of living, provide structure to our days,
but leave us with that familiar ole existential angst.
What tells us that something is absent? What
knows that we are missing half of the show? It’s the great
longings. These longings call on us, and when we listen, they
grant us guidance, and ultimately entry into self-realization.
Our primary longing is the need for identity. This longing gives birth to life’s most significant question, “Who am I?” We long to know who we are, and we want to be one with the source of our being. Knowing who we are requires giving up the “Me” that we thought we were. Knowing who we are doesn’t require more information or self-improvement; it requires realization. It sounds simple, but who we are is hidden under layers of false self-identification – layers that must be stripped away. And we are so affixed to that false identity that we hold on for dear life to a life that doesn’t exist!
Discovering who we are is our life’s greatest work, but are there other great longings? Yes. There are many pulls that add dimension to our lives. While some may spring from a biological nudging, they are much more than our longing to survive. What are these other great longings?
- We long to belong. We want our tribe.
Together we not only survive, we can thrive. Humans are one of
twenty evolutionary lines whose survival was predicated on
cooperation and altruism. We can’t exist without others. While
we might hide and think of ourselves as loners, we are dependent
on others for food, clothing, and shelter. We are one humanity,
intertwined not only by necessity, but by a great longing.
- We long for meaning and purpose. Some say we
are born with a mission written on our souls, and we are here to
live our divine imperative, but suppose there’s no handwriting
on our wall? There’s still hope. We can fashion meaning and
purpose in our lives. It is our divine gift to be able to create
our lives and our experiences.
- We want to be happy. Joseph Campbell
encouraged us to follow our bliss, but many of us just want to
rest in our bliss, if we could just find it. While we beat the
bushes for our happiness, we fail to see the grail cup we are
sitting on. Happiness occurs when we rest in the wordless wonder
of the life that spreads itself before us. Happiness does not
require a search. It’s one more thing we must realize, but since
we love to search, happiness can come through many doors. How
fortunate. The Universe is rigged on our behalf.
- We long to create. Not everyone wants to be an artist, but we long to create something. Some create through words and songs, while others create through inventions or resolutions to problems. My aunt was a renowned artist. She once told me, “Anyone can be an artist; they just have to practice enough to be good.” And she did. As a college student, her art was inventive, but as she practiced, she went from someone who couldn’t draw a convincing circle, to one who could draw a picture-perfect likeness of anything. Creating may not come easy at first; we all can’t be a Mozart. But if our desire outlasts our need for instant gratification, we can prime the pump of our creativity and satisfy our need to be creative.
The great longings have a shadow side. When we feed them with addictions or addictive practices, their fire consumes us, but when we follow these longings with our heart, they provide a path to a life of spiritual richness. We are on a journey that allows us to turn grasping into blessing, despair into joy, and loneliness into communion with our source. The great longings are lights that show us the way. Next time you have a spiritual itch or a nudge, follow it to its source, and you will find that it stems from one of the great longings, and, if you are wise, you’ll scratch that itch; you’ll follow that urge and that will make your life EZier and EZier.

Hair Health
We love our hair. Women spend millions to color, cut, style, and manipulate their hair. Here are few tips for healthy hair that are free and easy to do. You may want to try this even if you have a bald head. You might restart hair growth
- Practice deep breathing exercises or aerobics. Hair needs
oxygen. As we get older, we tend to subventilate, so be sure
that your exhale is at least as deep as your inhale. Breathe in
to the count of 5 and out to the count of 5. Repeat the exercise
until you have completed 10 rounds.
- Rub the center of the base of your neck for 5 to 10 seconds.
This point works with breathing and circulation. This massage
benefits more than our breathing. It also helps one relax.
Rubbing this point produces mental clarity, relieves symptoms of
sinusitis, and fights the common cold.
- Gently pull your hair. Yes grab handfuls of your hair and pull
gently all over the head. Feel the energy. Wow! The head comes
alive. This stimulates the hair as well as the whole body. If
you are bald, tap. (Do not tap at night. Tapping stimulates and
is not conducive to sleep.)
- To stimulate hair growth, fold your fingers on both hands, put your nails together, and rub, rub rub sideways, as if you are buffing them. Go faster and faster; then relax your hands.
Here’s hoping that doing these exercises on a regular bass will give us good hair days. No “hair today and gone tomorrow.” Let’s stimulate our hair so we can have healthy, happy hair.
