The Anne Report
Dear ,
This was a tense week for many people in America. My husband and I decided not to watch the election returns this year. We wanted to forgo the intensity and guessed, as most others did, that the issue would not be settled on Tuesday night. My six-year-old grands had a school lesson about the election on Tuesday. They told me all about it. Thomas declared his allegiance to Donald Trunk and Reynolds preferred Joe Viden. Love those boys.
We had a delightful evening and started a Netflix series entitled “The Queen’s Gambit,” which tuned out to be a riveting series about a young chess player who stunned the world with her expert playing abilities. I recommend this series. I think being entertained on Tuesday night was a good choice for us. Television news is like mainlining drama. I rarely watch it. My preference is to glance through the online headlines and read a few good articles by people I admire. One of my favorite bloggers is Rev. John Pavlovitz. I like Mitch Horowitz, the historian and author, and my Twitter favorite is psychic, John Edward. News precipitates Hard Attacks. Not for me.
I am thrilled to have a new bookcase and look forward to having my books accessible. We are still unpacking, and each day offers news opportunities. Jim worked for two days installing an antenna in the attic and putting our TV receiver and other equipment in the laundry room. The project is still not complete until he can get someone to help with some lifting. Moving into a house is a continuation of construction. First the house was constructed; now we will construct our stuff in a way that looks good, feels good, and enhances our lifestyle.
Grandpoppy, AKA my husband Jim, turned 74 this week, and we celebrated with the twins and family. I made his favorite, a pumpkin pie, from a real pumpkin. I now have enough pumpkin to make about 10 pies. Next year maybe I won’t get such a big pumpkin! And that’s it for the Anne Report.

Paradigm Shifts
This morning, as I lounged in contemplation of the secrets of the Universe and the thought of buckwheat pancakes for breakfast, another thought danced across my mind. It was one word: “Beowulf.” I remember that poem from high school. We had to read it in Old English. There was no internet to help me interpret it and I was overwhelmed by the way it was written and its complexity. Somehow, and not with ease, I muddled through high school English, despite Beowulf. Then, in college, the professor had to bring Beowulf back into the conversation. What was it with Beowulf? Now my subconscious mind pulls it out and parades it across my mind again. Really? Naturally, I had to look it up.
Here are the results. Beowulf was the first English epic poem. Though it was written in English, the story came from old Scandinavian tales. As with epic tales, it featured our hero, Beowulf. Beowulf, along with some valiant Geats, came to the aid of King Hrothgar. The king loved to throw parties and enjoy life, but a demon, Grendel, who was jealous, or perhaps just a curmudgeon, started killing off the king’s companions one by one. Beowulf comes in to save the day, or rather the night, since the sea monster always attacked at night. Beowulf kills the demon, and there is great celebration, but it is short-lived. The demon’s mother appears on the scene to vindicate her son’s murder. Beowulf defeats her, and Beowulf eventually becomes king. Beowulf rules peacefully for 50 years, but, as always, a problem arises. This time a dragon is the antagonist. Although Beowulf defeats the dragon and secures a fortune for his kingdom, his thanes flee to the forest, due to fears born from a prophecy of great evils to befall them. Without their protector, they hid in fear, thus forfeiting the treasure Beowulf lost his life to procure.
Though the epic poem does have a hero, it reeks of melancholy. The scholar, Sibaprasad Dutta, describes it this way: “It (meaning the poem) breathes the air of the tomb.” Deep suffering was endemic during those times. What does that suffering have to do with us? Those thoughts, stories, beliefs, and emotions still permeate the present. Those thoughts and feelings were handed down to each subsequent generation. Haven’t you noticed them? There is a mild cynicism, an undifferentiated anxiety, that blots our enthusiasm for life. Is there a sinister plot in the collective egoic mind that keeps us in pain and misery? Maybe, because we defend our suffering and work hard to protect it. We sanctify our ego driven suffering because it defines us. (Remember that genuine suffering is different than ego driven suffering and struggle.)
We owe much to teachers like Norman Vincent Peale, who brought the hermetic teachings of old to the masses. Those principles and ideals provided another option. Maybe he, along with others, form the archetype of a more modern, joy-filled Beowulf. It is a collective thought form that took the modern world by storm. Positive thought psychology provides an opening to an unlimited thought field. It’s like Roger Bannister who broke the four-minute mile run record in 1954. The four-minute mile run was the holy grail of athletic achievement, but after the barrier was broken, more than a thousand runners have gone on to achieve that goal. We have thousands, millions of people who have escaped the despair of our ancestors. Though a few mystics and saints found the path to deeper joy, it is only of late that the masses have opened their minds to a better way. Yes, positive thinking has a dark side. It is not to be used as a cover up for real suffering. You can put whipped cream on a mud pie and never come up with a delicious dessert, but positive thinking is a perfect way to turn our minds away from the habitual, useless suffering that drives our culture and kidnaps our personal identities.
The Buddha encouraged us to examine all beliefs and doctrines, all religions. We should never take another’s word for truth until we know from our inner highest authority that it is true. So it is with this change that is possible right now for each of us. We can break the four-minute mile limitation of our consciousness and receive the treasure Beowulf gave his life’s blood for. He secured a treasure for us, and we can run into the forest and protect ourselves from the what ifs of life or we can come to the circle of life, arms wide open, to collectively receive the power that is present, and when we do, everything becomes EZier and EZier.

Abundance Affirmations
This group is a place to post uplifting affirmations and thoughts about prosperity and abundant living. Let’s create a right relationship with money so that we feel comfortable about money. Let’s use money as it’s meant to be used, and not as a way to accumulate power or to fill a void. We don’t need money to buy more stuff. We need it to create a world that works for everyone. We want to cast off old beliefs of lack and reclaim our natural state of abundance. Anne, AKA Dr. Money, posts a nightly goodnight video for the prosperity team, and everyone who watches those videos becomes a part of the prosperity team.
