A Note From Anne
Dear ,
Recently, I came across this silly poem I wrote more than 15 years ago. If you remember from last week’s newsletter, silliness, when properly placed, assuages fear and terminal seriousness.
Martyr, Martyr, let it go.
Do not suffer, be in flow.
Take your pain and add some ease.
Let your thoughts be peaceful please.
Do not struggle, do not stress.
Give your stuff a needed rest.
Life is easy when you’re not
Making life a Hardaholic plot.
EZosophy is the way
To send hardships to their grave.
Make life easy, make it light.
Forget the need to be uptight.
Life is good; just let it be.
Give up the drama and you will see
Freedom, lightness, love, and peace.
Easy thoughts bring quick release.
I am willing to risk being corny; it keeps my intellectual side humble. I hope this brings at least a smile and points to the thought that we can make life easier and easier.
Anne
The Courage to Love
To love those who bug us is freedom. To truly surrender our hearts, especially when we are in the presence of people who drain us, who prattle on, or who appear vindictive or angrily righteous, these are love's greatest moments. If our hearts remain open and generous when people lecture us, teach us, and try to direct our lives, great peace ensues. To be nonreactive when others criticize us is the great challenge. These are the people who give us the ability for the final release.
If we lived in a culture where we had a personal spiritual teacher, we might recognize that when these people appear on the horizon, it is the master in disguise. There are no chance encounters, and each person we meet is an assignment in the school of life. Being kind to all is a chance we must take even in the face of harshness, pettiness, and cruelty.
Our reactions to people must be based on our values, not on others' behaviors. We are like sailboats who are blown about by the winds of others until we allow the winds of our hearts to direct us. Everyone wants to feel loved. When we love others, love bestows a great blessing; we experience that love ourselves. We receive what we give.
Love is two sided - there is the love we give and the love we receive, but unlike a coin, love is a circle and its movement has unlimited momentum. Drink deeply into each moment, because love is here: it is behind each word, under each rock, and in the open as well. It is subtle and will not compete with pride, control, or power, yet it is unconditional and shines on the just and the unjust. May each moment in your life and each breath you take, be an invocation for this ever-present love. It is a perennial gift awaiting you the receiver, and it is always with you.

What people are saying about Standing in the Dark:
"Standing in the Dark, by Anne Sermons Gillis, isn't
just another positive thinking book. It's a book about the
difficult times in life and what we can do to make it through
them. It does, however, give us positive ways to make life easier.
It's a short book, but it's one that may just turn your thinking
on its head, which will probably be the best thing that's happened
to your thinking in a long time. It's about how to bring more ease
into a life that isn't easy all of the time. Anne discusses six
main areas of life: Ease, Mission, Health, Relationships, Money,
and Loss."

Morning Back Warm Up
Do you bound out of bed in the morning? It seems like a peppy exit from your cozy nest might be desirable, but your back wants to tell you something. "This is not for me. Slow down." The back needs to warm up before you head for the running path or even the shower, and it's simple to get your back off your back. Three little stretches loosen your back and make it ready for activity.
While still lying in bed, bring your right knee up to your chest and hug it. Do the same for the left knee. Finally, hold both knees to your chest and hug them. Let go of your legs and you and your back are ready to start the day.
