  A Note From Anne

Dear ,

It’s been an exciting week. I had such a great time in an online chat with Robin Blanc Mascari and Moni Patterson. They do an interview for those who need support in sales and really, just in life. If you are a Facebooker, their page is Wise Women Weekly with Robin and Moni. They would love for you to join them. Their website is WiseWomenWeekly.com.

We had a little fender bender the day of the interview. We, meaning Jim and I, were about an hour from home and it was a little dicey making it back. We actually left before the police arrived – we did call them to be sure that was okay -- in order to make the show. I was a little shaken from the accident, standing in the heat, and the mad dash home. So rather than preparing for the interview when I got home, my original plan, I did some self-massage, deep breathing, and took a quick shower. The stress abated and I was back on center.

When my emotions are rattled, I’ve found it best to attend to my body. It is tempting to go over notes before an interview, but I’ve found when I take care of my body first, even if I have to skip something else, my life is EZier and EZier.

  The Other Secret

When the movie, The Secret, came out, there were several reactions. People were excited and fascinated with the idea of creating their destinies. Life is not a series of misfires or luck. Our lives reflect our thoughts, dreams, and emotions. Life does not occur at the pleasure of a whimsical universe or a harsh God. For some this idea was liberating, for others depressing, and for some, blasphemy.

Many already knew the secret. It wasn’t a real secret. Metaphysicians rejoiced as the age old philosophy showed up on Larry King, Oprah, and in mainstream America. Finally, people can be at choice and have the power to live meaningful lives.

Many of those same metaphysicians simultaneously stepped back, sensing not only opportunity, but also pitfalls: “OMG, now everyone knows the secret to creating more junk and another path to greater narcissism. As our planet is stripped of her ability to sustain life, some of our best minds will be absorbed in getting more power, things, appreciation, and approval. While sea levels rise, egos run amok. We have justice issues, human rights issues. We don’t need more dream houses, status cars, and soul mates. We need life. We may not save human life as we know it, but we must find out who we are. We need to know what life is. We need something that reveals that which fulfills, that which stops the chattering mind, that which dissolves endless desire and suffering.” What a mystery this secret - two sides of the same coin: one empowers; the other destroys.

For some the secret is a bridge to life and for others it is a detour into spiritual and physical materialism. Those who walk the bridge and realize the dangers of personal power choose to move closer to the truth, even when they don’t know where they are or where they are going. The secret carries spiritual casualties, but many survive and begin to experience the other secret, the real secret. That which is apparent is often the thing most overlooked. A Course in Miracles aptly states this: “Simplicity is difficult for twisted minds.” Spiritual seekers chase the dream of enlightenment while overlooking what life offers and the sweetness of the present eternal life.

There’s a saying, “Before enlightenment, chop wood, carry water. After enlightenment, chop wood and carry water.” That Zen proverb illustrates that when we experience the truth of our being, everything on the outside looks the same, while the inside is radically different. This is where our work lies. Life is an inside job. Getting more things has its place – we need a safe place to live and a reliable car to drive. We need enough food and good friends, but the benefits of acquisition have an ending point and at that point getting more stuff becomes a road block to our spiritual redemption. While working hard to be better people and to gain some power over our helplessness, we can be so busy and self-involved that we overlook what is present.

H.W.L. Poonja tells this story. A jewel thief observed a man buying a coveted gemstone. The thief followed the man who eventually bought a train ticket and boarded. The thief bought a ticket as well and continued his pursuit. He slept in the same compartment as the gem owner and while the man slept, he went through his belongings. He could not find the jewel. When they departed the train he stopped the man. “I am a master jewel thief and I planned to steal your gem. Sir, I could not find it. I have never failed. Please tell me, where did you hide it?” The man smiled and reached into the thief’s pocket and pulled out the jewel. “Sir, I saw you watching me. I know your reputation, so I hid the diamond where you would never look, in your pocket.”

We all have a diamond in our pocket. It is essential that we live with the kind of awareness that observes the treasure we carry. Life, as it’s sold to us, is hyped up and busy. We have to take a step away from the flurry to live in peacefulness. We can only discover peace moment to moment, and if we repeatedly complicate our lives, that peace remains unmined, at the bottom of our minds and under our “to do” lists.

Take a moment to tune into the ongoing ever present peace and joy of life and your actions will be without effort, and your life will be EZier and EZier.

Mental Management

We all have those times when we feel out of control. Once we lose that mentally steady feeling, we can sink into overwhelm. To gain back that sense of feeling that our feet are soundly planted in reality, try this one simple task. Spend 15 minutes cleaning out a drawer, the top of your desk, or your closet. You will need a confined space to work with. Everyone has 15 minutes and you will be amazed at how much better you can feel in such a short time.
