  A Note From Anne

Dear ,

Happy Thanksgiving. It’s almost here. Grocery store lists fill our heads and we enter the prime bustling season. Bustle if you must, but bring your EZosophy skills to the kitchen, to the table, and to work.

We’re having three guests for Thanksgiving lunch. I really enjoy cooking and the key for me is to start in plenty of time. I have visions of Christmas trees dancing in my head and I hope to get one up early so I have time to enjoy it. I will visit my grans for Christmas, so I’ll get things going early. I’ll have to admit we’ve already had three homemade pumpkin pies and two loaves of pumpkin bread. I’m going out today to hunt down another pumpkin!

Don’t have a hard attack, give up ego driven suffering, and have a great Thanksgiving Day.

Anne

  Messy Mental Mass Syndrome

Do you have mass – titus … too much stuff in your head? Or maybe you suffer from messy mental mass syndrome (MMMS). MMMS syndrome leads to artificial dissemination of prejudice, mis-informed beliefs, criticism of self and others, and judgments.

There’s also mental blindness--not being able to see the obvious staring you in the face. Maybe you have foggy breakdown, where you walk around in a fog – no focus.

It’s up to us to take control of our minds and put them in their places. But where does the mind belong? Where is a safe space to store the mind? Is there a mind garage where we can park the mind until we really need it?

Life is mostly about the mind until we take a deep look at what it’s doing. When we become aware of our mental capers and games, we move from being dragged around by our thoughts and feelings, to a new place of serenity, peace, and ease.

What do we need to do to tame to mind?

  • Develop a strong mind – keep it focused so it doesn’t hop around. Watching the breath is a powerful, time-tested way to tether the mind so it is ready and open, not off and running. Be aware as you breathe in and out. “Breathing in, I know am breathing in. Breathing out, I know I am breathing out.” Check out Buddha’s 16 sutras in breath awareness. (Go about half way down the page. They are numbered 1 – 16.) Each one is meant to be contemplated for a while, maybe just one sutra per sitting, but working with all 16 in one sitting creates a reflective space.
  • Don’t take thoughts so seriously. We are not our thoughts. Let thoughts pass through without attacking them. They don’t have to be corrected or policed. Awareness is enough. They are just thoughts, not gunshots.
  • Provide periods of quite for the mind. Observe more. Really see what you are looking at. Do you see your pet, the person in front of you, or the light as it filters through the window? Look with a quiet mind. Don’t mentally evaluate, analyze, or criticize the person in front of you.

These practices strengthen the “let it go” muscle. We awake due to grace, but when we learn to let go, we become more prone to grace.

Don’t let your mind mess with you. It’s not a worthy opponent. Let the mind rest more as you become aware of your thoughts, feelings, physical sensations, and what is in front of you. Look out and look in with equal curiosity. Let go, and your life will get EZier and EZier.

  Quotes

"One should forgive, under any injury,” says the Mahabharata. “It hath been said that the continuation of species is due to man’s being forgiving. Forgiveness is holiness; by forgiveness the universe is held together. Forgiveness is the might of the mighty; forgiveness is sacrifice; forgiveness is quiet of mind. Forgiveness and gentleness are the qualities of the self-possessed. They represent eternal virtue." – Ghandi

"Logic doesn’t convince people who already have their mind made up. It simply solidifies what they already believe."
– My husband heard this in an interview and quoted it to me. I don’t know who was being interviewed.

"Resort to force in the Great War (I) failed to bring tranquility,” Franklin D. Roosevelt has pointed out. "Victory and defeat were alike sterile. That lesson the world should have learned." – Excerpt from Autobiography of a Yogi

Standing in the Dark
by Anne Sermons Gillis

Standing in the Dark is a salve for the out-of-control mind. In a high-speed society that forces time to do double-time and stuffs minds with inestimably complex information, we need mental medicine.

Popular mind-bending methods encourage us to come up with the highest thoughts, to be positive and powerful, and to live our passion. Yet that which is the highest is beyond what words can touch. One may use thoughts in constructive ways and think higher thoughts, yet one must be aware that the mind plays little tricks on itself to calm itself down. Trickery is okay, but the whole idea of choosing our thoughts and our lives is an intermediary step. Through choice we learn to gain control of our minds and lives, so that at some point we can surrender the mechanism that chooses.

Rosemary Essential Oil

Sinus infections and stopped up nostrils are common this time of year. There’s a wonderful alternative to over the counter drugs – rosemary essential oil. It’s got that menthol smell. Put some on a cotton ball and sniff, sniff, sniff. It unclogs the nostrils. I keep a bottle beside my bed as a medical companion. I also mix a few drops of rosemary essential oil with some other oil--I use avocado but olive oil will also do. I pour a few drops into my palm, dip my pinky into the mixture, and put my oiled finger into my nostrils. It’s a great way to kill unwanted germs.

Rosemary essential oil is almost a miracle oil. It reduces skin inflammation (always mix with a carrier oil such as olive, sesame, coconut, avocado, etc.), stimulates hair growth, heals athlete foot, relieves respiratory problems, and reduces pain.

There are many benefits to using the oil, both topically and internally. For more on rosemary check out:
