  A Note From Anne

Dear ,

Wednesday my husband, Jim, goes in for more tests, etc., before he starts radiation treatment. The Anne Art that says “I Love You” is a piece I did for him to show my support. If my time holds up, I’ll do a piece for him for each treatment. Say a little prayer or two for Jim.

Many of you have had the experience of being with a loved one who had medical treatment, or perhaps you were the one who had some kind of treatment. It is amazing how well things can fall into place even during the worst of times. Last week, Jim had anesthesia for a procedure. We left home at 5 AM and returned about 4 PM, but it was one of those perfect days. He was a little sore and groggy, but we dodged the Houston traffic on the return home and my little patient took a nap after we arrived home.

Life is so much easier when we accept the unpleasant events and allow the magic to continue. No matter what situations we have in our lives, when we are open to life support, everything becomes EZier and EZier.

  The Human Situation

I purchased a book on joy this summer. The book is a masterpiece in content and physical appearance. The author is a well-known (in some circles) spiritual teacher and an acquaintance of mine. We were both attendees to a conference on Science and Spirituality. I mentioned to him that I purchased his book. He responded sheepishly, “I can’t live up to the ideas and principles I’ve written about in that book. I’m a work in progress.” This man is an elder and lives a wisdom-filled life, yet he describes a state that is familiar to most of us.

We all have access to deep wisdom. We often touch the Universe’s sweet spot. We speak with great depth and even inspire others, yet we know how the door to freedom and liberation is booby trapped. Without a warning, it closes and we feel strewn about by the winds of fate.

Those who are open to life’s mysteries live in the dual state of heaven and earth. We are free and bound simultaneously, and reconciling those opposites is our life’s work.

How can we forge a meaningful life when we are pulled by two ends of existence? We can’t say either/or to life; we have to embrace it all. We must be whole, integrated people.

Here are some ways to deal with the human versus spiritual dilemma:

  • Don’t see events as good and bad. See them as neutral.
  • Don’t try to avoid situations you can’t avoid. You will run yourself ragged. Stay and face the storm. It will clear.
  • Don’t try to fix everything. Sometimes it’s best to have a “wait-and-see” policy.
  • Learn to keep the mind clean and clear. Often it’s our mental chaos that gives rise to problematic reasoning. Mindfulness and meditation are love-filled blankets for mental frost bite.
  • Be watchful of the breath. Conscious breathing is the prayer of the mystic.
  • Realize that you will have off times, frequently. They don’t define you.
  • Honor the mundane. In doing so, it becomes sacred.

Life is a “less is more” proposition. The more we step back and release our need to analyze and fix everything, the easier it is to follow the wisdom that emerges when we show up and pay attention. As we move into the ongoing flow of life, we lose the urgency and emergency we place on life. We more easily accept that life is full of twists and turns, and getting caught in one of those turns is not a crisis. We are where we need to be, when we need to be, and the less we fight reality, the easier life becomes.

We are all in a life boat. The good news is that we are together. We are afloat in life’s dream and the dream is filled with drama, but the boat is floating in an endless sea of love. If I were you, I’d pay attention to the sea, because if you do, life will be EZier and EZier.

  Quotes

"You don’t have to fix everything. There’s nothing wrong with something being wrong." – Anne Sermons Gillis

We’ve all heard the saying, "Wherever I go, I am there." A friend of mine put it like this: 'I'm a member of a dysfunctional family. And I live alone."

"Just keep a slice of the advice you give so free."
– Lyrics for the song "People Will Say We're in Love"

Free Verse

Words creep out of my mind as if they are embarrassed to show themselves.
And I’m no help.
No mastery of the mystery for me.
I wait for the flow, but for now, I’m a writer without a cause.

Anne's book, Offbeat Prayers for the Modern Mystic: Making Life Easier Through Innovative Prayer, is a compilation of prayers I have written over the years. They are my heartfelt attempts to synthesize the human walk with the Divine Mystery.

A Course in Miracles states that "prayer is the medium for miracles."

This book is an expression of many offbeat prayer forms, including songs to help the reader return to the original state of innocence. It draws from my experiences of the mystical, recovery, and metaphysics. Even when we are in the flow, life can be bumpy. This book, which is “sincere but not serious,” points to the joy that underlies all of life. Whether reading the book from cover to cover or merely by opening to a random page, the reader is sure to find something to ease the tension of everyday seriousness. It takes the reader on a journey into the depths (doubt) and heights (faith) of human emotion and spiritual unfolding. I pray that the revelation of the dark and the light side of life will bring forth a deep remembering and move the reader from the mundane to the miraculous.

Sweet Potato Dish for One (Or More)

My three favorite foods are watermelon, pomegranates, and sweet potatoes. Fortunately, I can get good sweet potatoes all year long. My other favorite foods are seasonal.

I prefer a good sweet potato over any dessert. Don’t tempt me; I will eat that cheese cake, but that would be a rare occasion. Sweet potatoes are a staple in my food arsenal.

Sweet potatoes are rich in vitamin B6, vitamin C, vitamin D, iron, and magnesium. The health benefits of this formidable orange food are plentiful, but the best thing about them is that, even naked, they are delicious. This morning I had one lone cooked sweet potato, so I concocted a sweet potato breakfast.

Here’s a recipe you can make quickly for one person. It contains cinnamon, an anti-inflammatory which helps regulate blood sugar and which is loaded with antioxidants. It also has citrus, which is rich in vitamin C, and Brazil nuts, that provide us with our daily dose of selenium.

Ingredients

▶ One medium-sized baked sweet potato
▶ One medium-sized orange
▶ 4 raw Brazil nuts
▶ ½ to 1 teaspoon cinnamon (More if you prefer. It is a thermogenic herb that boosts metabolism, so I use it l liberally.)

Peel sweet potato and cut into pieces. Peel and cut up orange. Mix with potato. Top with cinnamon and nuts. Eat and enjoy.
