  The Anne Report

The Value of Social Interaction

Dear ,

It’s been another banner week in my life. I traveled to Nacogdoches, Texas to spend some time with my friend, Mary. She wanted her 59th birthday to be a memorable because she is leaving the 50's in one short year. We had a great time. My friends, Michael and Evelyn, visited from Oldsmar, Florida. They were on the tail end of a 3-month RV trip.

I'm listening to a series on the brain, and, according to the series, one of the factors in determining health is social interaction – community, friends, spiritual circle. Maybe having friends and community is as important or perhaps more important than healthy eating. Doctors who practice functional medicine look at who you are hanging around with. Dr. Daniel Amen says, "People are contagious. You become like the people you hang out with."

If you take a burning log and separate it from the fire, the fire will die out before the entire log burns. If you keep the logs together, they will burn until they are ashes. The moral of that story: we need each other to stay warm. We need each other so our fire won't go out.

One of the worst punishments for prisoners is solitary confinement. We may not be in prison, but do we sentence ourselves to solitary confinement by keeping our heads in our computers or televisions? While being in front of a screen may have some benefits, there are no studies that say that people who sit in front of any kind of screen for prolonged periods of time live longer. There are many kinds of solitary confinement, and sometimes I wonder, am I in solitary? The answer: sometimes I am. It’s a question to keep in the forefront of our minds, because in this world of social media and technology, it's easy to disengage without realizing it. We want to be healthy, happy, and fulfilled, and it seems that hanging out with people who uplift us is vital to our health. Let’s pay attention and become the kind of people that inspire and uplift others, so we can be an integral part of others’ health. Friendship should be a mutual admiration society, not a demolition derby! And that’s it for the Anne Report.

Our Amazing Minds

My friend Karen and I met when we were in our early twenties. We attended the same church and though we moved away from the Presbyterian church, we remained friends. We even founded a church together. We laughed and cried together as we explored all brands of spirituality. There was no road untraveled as we wandered through the mystery of life.

Karen consistently kicks my butt when I'm stuck, in a most sacred manner, of course, and often I listen. Shen ooed and ahhed about Dr. Joe Dispenza's work. She crooned. I heard her words through the filter of already having too many unfinished books to read, my work, and the tasks it takes to maintain life. "Not for me, at this time," I thought, as she glowed on. It's odd how this works. After months of hearing his accolades, I had the thought, "I would like to have a Dispenza book," so I downloaded the Kindle sample of his book, Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself. The next day Karen called to get my address in SC, where I would spend my birthday. She sneaked past my defenses by giving me two of Dispenza's books for my birthday.

This story has purpose. It delivers a truth: the universe provides what we need, when we need it. It took a while of hearing about the Dispenza work, but I needed those books, and I was finally ready. Yes, the universe is on time, every time. If the books had come earlier, they may have lived at the bottom of a stack of books. Now, I am slowly imbibing the book, You Are the Placebo, and doing a Dispenza meditation daily. I'm blown away. There are a lot of studies in his book that I've read about, but in his book they are woven together, in one place, for me to use as healing cheerleaders. And there are many stories that are new to me. It's a wow, wow book for anyone who wants to heal their life and their body. It points us to the natural pharmacy. The body diagnoses, prescribes the medicine, and fills the prescription. There are no detrimental side effects. Here's a wonderful meditation. It is good for the beginner and the seasoned meditator as well. Find more Dr. Joe by going to his resources page.

Get his book, You Are the Placebo. You will want to read the knee surgery study. One group had the surgery and the other had an incision and stitches but no surgery. The group that did not have surgery, but were told they did, had as high a recovery rate as those who had the surgery! Even six years later, they still had a good range of motion. This study was done at Baylor School of Medicine in Houston. In another study, people who were given placebo antidepressants started producing four times more serotonin. Dentists worked on patients who produced their own endorphins. The mind has more power than we imagine, and, at this juncture in modern medicine, some doctors can't deny the power of the mind. Check out The Biochemistry of Belief.

I mentioned last week that I heard Rev. Edwene Gaines speak. She has always wanted to do standup comedy. On her plane ride to Houston she sat beside a man who, after hearing of her bucket list item, doing standup comedy, invited her to perform at his comedy club in Manhattan. Anyone who has heard Edwene knows she was born with a funny bone. She is an amazing spiritual entertainer and a seasoned speaker. She's one of the women in ministry I most admire. I love what she said about performing: "I am afraid, but I'm going to do it anyway. I've worked up my routine and I'm going to do practice performances." Edwene is 78 years old. I first heard her speak in the 1970's, and she was dynamite then. Yet, like all of us, she feels fear when faced with a new opportunity, even though she is already an excellent speaker. "I am afraid, but I am going to do it anyway" leads us down wonderful paths. And the universe is always beside us, providing the way to our dreams, but we must heed the call and stretch ourselves. As for the universe's timing, it was perfect for Edwene. It matched a performer with a venue.

We are supported by a loving, infinite intelligence that not only gives to us, it becomes us. We are the hands and feet that serve others, produce inspired art, write the songs that make the young girls cry (Thank you, Barry Manilow.), and who create a shower of blessings. The wonderful part of this creative source is that it has perfect timing, perfect order, and, when we need a jumpstart or even a kick in the butt, it provides the perfect motivation for change. Now's the time to join the insurrection and rebel against the beliefs that we are alone, unguided, unwanted, and guilty of a crime we can't remember. Because when we do, we always find that life is EZier and EZier.

Anne Quotes

"We plan, make our to do lists, run errands, and set and accomplish goals, but the greatest change we ever make is to change the way we use our minds. It's not about rooting out the bad thoughts; it's about not allowing the mind to dramatize our thoughts and feelings. Drama is a drug, and it's time to drop the drama."

"During this Thanksgiving season, when thoughts of terrorism and fear loom large in the collective mind, let's not let extremism and tragedy become defining points in our lives. Let's reach deeper and find life's blessing; it's always here. Blessing is more powerful than cynicism, hate, and fear. The angel Gabriel said, "Fear not." I think that's a great idea."

"Life is big. It is bigger than what we can know with our minds, yet it's the perfect size to be known in our hearts. Regardless of what is going on for you this week, I wish you a heart full of appreciation for life itself. There is only one life. It comes in many forms. Let's share it, love it, and appreciate it."

Every Little Cell in My Body is Healthy

When we are happy, our cells are happy. When we are sad, our cells are sad. It's okay to be sad, but when we are depressed or sad for a prolonged length of time, our bodies react. We know that a spouse's grieving the loss of their longtime mate can lead to a stroke or a heart attack. Happiness heals, but the words we say, when spoken in anger or irritation, can affect us as well. When we are happy, we produce endorphins that act as pain killers. When we are sad, we are in more physical pain.

If you want to get out of a mood that suppresses your immune system, click the image below to watch the video, entitled Every Little Cell.

Here are the words to the video, in a pdf file.

Even though this article is quite short, I think the song is powerful enough to stand alone as a healing agent!
