  The Anne Report

Anne's Grand Kayaking Adventure

Dear ,

This was an eventful week. The highlight came on Wednesday evening when I went kayaking. I made the mistake of not checking the time when I went out, and since I was on tidal water, I wanted to catch my water window, the time when the tide was high enough for kayaking. I stepped into the kayak, sat down, grabbed a paddle, and pushed off. The route was not familiar. Tall grasses had grown into the channel since I was last there, but I knew if I kept going, I would find a clearing. Eventually a path cleared, and I paddled down to the osprey nest. There were more jumping fish than normal; I was hoping one wouldn't jump in the boat. I turned around to return and a sand crab ran under my feet. I kept my eyes on the critter, not wanting a physical visit. Another sand crab emerged. I used the oar to keep them off while keeping an eye out to avoid the jumping fish. One jumped right beside the kayak and startled me. "What's up with these fish?" I could imagine trying to get a flopping, slimy fish out of the kayak.

In giving all this attention to the wildlife, I realized that I was lost. The little channel I took went to a bridge, but not the right bridge. I figured I could find my way back to the bird nest and retrace my way back, but I wasn't sure of the time, and it was getting dark. I didn't have time. Okay, I'll just ask for directions, but the boat docks were empty. I kept paddling. I guessed everyone was in for the night. My plan was to paddle until it got almost dark and if I didn't find someone, I would dock the boat, climb out of the kayak, find a house, and knock on someone's door. This was not a great plan, because standing on a kayak is not an easy task, but it was my last-ditch plan.

I paddled and eventually saw a boat ahead of me. I yelled hello and waved, but they just waved backed. I kept waving my hand and yelling while paddling as hard as I could. They kept waving back to me. They finally figured out I needed help. I asked for directions and he assured me I had gone the right way and asked if anyone was home to stand on the dock, to show me which dock it was. I said I could not have missed a locker on the dock and an Alabama flag. He saw an old, confused lady, and, while I was confused about where I needed to go, and some might consider me old, I was certain of where I had been – to the wrong place! Given our conversation, he asked if he could call someone to get directions. I gave him my husband's number, which he called. My husband said, "I've been expecting this call. Can you get her to the community dock?" My rescuer, Jeff, pointed me to the dock and I paddled down. Jim came with the truck, we loaded the kayak in the bed, and we returned to my daughter's house. It was 8:30 when we got arrived; almost dark. I'd been on an hour and a half adventure. To everyone's credit, no one teased me. "It was an easy mistake to make," my husband said. "I've almost done it myself." Personally, I blame it on the fish and the crabs! This may be my first fish tale, and I hope it's my last.

Happy Juneteenth

In Texas, where I'm from, the news of emancipation was slow to come. It was two years after Lincoln pronounced slaves as free, that the news reached Texas. June 19th or Juneteenth became a day of celebration for former slaves. Unfortunately, there are more slaves in the U. S. today than there were at the time of the emancipation. Here's one story of a human slave in the U. S. Houston, where I live, is one of the main hubs for forced prostitution or sex slavery. May the wisdom of Lincoln and the power of the people rise up to end these heinous practices. We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union – must do better than this.

Chance Encounters

I recently spoke with a woman who relayed a most compelling story. I met her several times during my past trips to Charleston, but we had never had a long conversation. I took time to ask about her life and she shared liberally. This one story I had to share. It's in my words, but I share it as if she had written this.

I went to the Charleston Duck Race. It is an annual fund raiser for charity. It was hot outside and I saw a child dressed in a duck suit. She was sweating, and I asked if I could get her a cold drink or an ice cream. There was a lady next to her that said, "Why don't you just take her home?" I replied, "I wish I could." It seems the child was in protective custody. We parted, and I went on my way.

There was a drawing that day and I won second prize. It was a trip to Disneyland. When I told my older sons about the trip, they started fighting over who would go, so I just put the tickets in a drawer and forgot them.

Time passed, and I met this nice guy. We got along well, but he was just out of a relationship and wasn't ready to jump back into one. Eventually, we did get together and marry. He had a young child and his ex-wife had custody. His ex-wife was not in shape to be a mother and I couldn't see the child continuing to live with her. I took money out of my retirement fund to fight for his child. We won the custody battle and settled in as a family. One day I opened the drawer and saw the tickets to Disney. They were good for two years and they expired in two months. I booked the trip to Disney and we all went. It turns out, that young child I met in the duck suit, was his daughter.

What a story. She won the tickets for Disneyland at the Duck Race and ended up taking the child she met in a duck suit to Disneyland. Her to be husband was not at that race, so the two meetings, meeting his daughter and meeting him later, were acausal. The next day, after hearing her story, while reading the local news, I saw that The Duck Race was happening that week. She had told me about the race, not even knowing it was upcoming that same week.

Was her experience kismet, synchronicity, divine order? You decide. I think it's all three.

Life is arranged in an orderly fashion. Some, like my friend, have the privilege of seeing those connections. I have had a few startling and amazing encounters myself. I always want to assume the miracle, but I want to be like an exuberant four-year old when they happen.

Hoping you are all having a great week, and remember that "Everything can be EZ or at least EZier."

  The Living Book

Click to learn about Anne's newest book, The Living Book.

Suppose someone told you that you could change your life radically, for the better, if you spent just three minutes a day doing inner work? Would you believe it? Maybe not, but wouldn't it be worth an investment of three minutes a day to try it?

The Living Book offers just this. Devote three minutes a day to this process and your life will become a living testimony to the seed principle. A tiny seed can grow into a mighty tree, but it must be planted. Plant your daily seed for three short minutes and notice both subtle and miraculous changes in your life. In addition to the daily practice, one can use the process when they are stumped or afraid or angry. This process transforms anger into love. When we plant seeds of light into our thoughts and emotional bodies, we move into higher frequencies of well-being.

This group is a place to post uplifting affirmations and thoughts about prosperity and abundant living. Let's create a right relationship with money so that we feel comfortable about money. Let's use money as it's meant to be used, and not as a way to accumulate power or to fill a void. We don't need money to buy more stuff. We need it to create a world that works for everyone. We want to cast off old beliefs of lack and reclaim our natural state of abundance.

Healthy Living Tips

I have a lot of experience in taking care of myself. I'm not a willing participant in some areas, so I try little tricks to keep me going. The following are those tricks.

  1. Eat less sugar. - I am not a great advocate for giving up sugar. I don't keep treats at home, but when I'm at pot lucks, parties, and friends' homes, I have trouble saying no to sugar. I read a startling fact, which I haven't been able to substantiate, that says that one teaspoon of sugar suppresses the immune system 40 percent, for up the five hours after eating it. Moral of the story – if you are sick, sugar is your enemy. If you are well, you can get away with eating some, but it's still not your friend. I keep coming up with evidence that will deter my eating sugar. I don't eat much, but it doesn't look like it takes much to do the body harm. My strategy is to keep reading horror stories of how sugar harms the body, and the information seems to help, for a while. Sugar is addictive, and it's not easy to kick the habit. Here's one more thought: Harvard Medical School says eating sugar increases your chances of having a heart attack, even if you are not overweight. Hum.
  2. Start your day out by stretching. - Stretch all over for ten seconds before you get out of bed. Copy your cat or dog. They know best. It helps relieve stiffness. In addition, 1) Hug your knees 2) Swing knees to right side, then left side, five times to each side. 3) Turn head gently from left to right and back to left, ten times.
  3. Try my 10 Method of exercise.
Some people don't want to exercise. Others don't find time to exercise. While most people think of setting aside a long stretch of time for exercising, how about just doing ten reps of any one of the following, when you get a chance. You need only two spare minutes to do any one of the exercises. When we take two spare minutes to exercise, at intervals throughout the day, our bodies benefit. Do each of these exercises standing up.

Breathe in as you raise both arms toward the ceiling or sky, and then breathe out as you bend down to touch your toes. Do this ten times.

Breathe in as you lift your right leg and touch your right knee with your left hand, and breathe out as you touch your left knee with your right hand. Do this ten times.

Breathe in as you lift your left leg and reach backward, with your right hand, to touch your left heel, and then breathe out as you lift your right leg and reach backward, with your left hand, to touch your right heel. Do this ten times.

Breathe in as you reach as high as you can with your right hand, then breathe out as you lean your body toward your left side. Then breathe in as you reach as high as you can with your left hand, and then breathe out as you lean your body toward your right side. Do this ten times.

Place the fingertips of your hands lightly touching the center of your chest. Then breathe in as you extend your right arm out to your right side, rotating your right arm further to the right, toward your back. Then breathe out as you bring your right hand back to the center of your chest. Then breathe in as you extend your left arm out to your left side, rotating your left arm further to the left, toward your back. Then breathe out as you bring your left hand back to the center of your chest. Do this ten times.

Breathe in to fill up your belly, and then breathe out as you suck your belly back in. Do this ten times. (You can do this while riding in a car or even while driving.)

Here’s Anne’s video on how to do the exercises. In the video, Anne is breathing in and out of her mouth. She meant to be breathing in and out of her nose.

  4. Get inspiration from this 102-year-old runner, Ida Keeling. You might also look at the words of wisdom from the world's oldest competitive dancer, Tao Porchon-Lynch. She teaches 7 yoga classes a week.

Taking care of ourselves is not always fun, so I try to make it as easy as possible. Maybe some of my ideas will make it easier for you too.
