Our Words Are Powerful

Dear ,

You may never want to say, "I travel half the time." That's a phrase I started saying, meaning it seemed like I travelled half the time, but now it is a reality. I return to Houston (The Woodlands) tonight for a couple of weeks, head back to Charleston, back to Houston, and then go to Toronto. I've already spent more than 6 months away from home this year. I'm not complaining; just sharing my experience of the law of attraction. Our words hold power.

I used to wonder about our electronic words. Do they influence us? Unfortunately, they do. They are like our thoughts. They get into our heads and roam around looking for a nesting place – a place where the they can hide, only to come out during our most vulnerable moments. We get routinely upset by what we read online – think Facebook. It seems we are addicted to screen time. We live in a cozy virtual world. We don't have to go outside for stimulation; we go online.

Not so for the little children. Thomas and Reynolds, my four-year-old grands, live with a sense of adventure and wonder. The way they think is not only entertaining, it is original.

Dad: Sit down, Reynolds. You know what happens when you stand up in your chair?
Reynolds: You fall down and crack your head open.
Dad: That's right.
Reynolds: Dad, what happens if you fall and crack your head closed?
Thomas: Grandmama, why does Lucy need so much petting? (Lucy is our dog)

I used to think people worked with young children because they couldn't make it in a grownup world. When I became a grandmother, I finally got it. People work with children because it is fun, mind-blowing, and rewarding. Children don't have talking points nor do they live from a conditioned mind.

On another note, I'll be 70 next Tuesday. New decade: new possibilities. That's it for the Anne Report.

Belonging is Our Nature

Did you ever wonder if you came from another planet or if you were adopted? I have. I'd heard we were made from star dust and thought maybe this star dust gave me some kind of special way to see the world, a perspective that others didn't seem to value or want. Of course, when I was young, I wouldn't have known where to look for those who shared my values or came from my perspective. I felt alone and isolated because of my beliefs and concepts. I heard of Carl Jung when I was in college. I was 18 and fascinated by the ideas that we had a shadow and that there was a yin/yang aspect to life. This was the kind of stuff I had searched for. At last, someone was making some sense. My classmates didn't seem to care or notice.

I didn't fit into my family or culture; maybe I was adopted. It was obvious, if you looked at my body, that I was in the right family. I sported a deep family resemblance to my sisters, but the things I longed for were different from what I thought my family members wanted and unlike the wishes of the people I knew. I wanted to talk to trees and to ignite the world with the fire and passion of love. I longed to understand the mysteries of the universe, feel like I fit in, and know that I was okay. In addition to these cravings, I wanted what my culture told me was essential for living the good life. I wanted to marry, be financially successful, have a nice car and home, join a country club, have children, and travel the world.

I walked in two worlds, one driven by an inner knowing and the other by societal expectation. This led to mayhem. My parents divorced when I was 2 years old. I didn't know but one person whose parents were divorced. She lived with her dad and stepmom. I only had my mom and sisters. Having divorced parents in the 1950's was rare and a fact that solidified and proved that I was alone.

These beliefs and circumstances shaped my life. They drove me to be a people pleaser and a rebel. I tried to fit in and set out to be radically different simultaneously. Looking back, it's amazing I didn't develop multiple personality disorder. Goodness, youth is fragile and complicated. Miraculously, I survived my youth. I found that I did belong. The belief that I didn't belong was common. Normal people have been dealing with that false belief forever. I wasn't alone in feeling alone. I was surrounded by people who felt like they were misfits and alone. And even though I survived this self-imposed solitary confinement, I'm certain others are still ensconced in this loner mentality. I see the hunger in people's eyes. People hunger to fit in and to belong. Their desires hide beneath the surface of opinionated recitations, angry exhortations, and deep sadness.

We all belong, but it takes some work to experience our belongingness. We are comfortable feeling alone because it is familiar. Here's an excerpt from my book, Words Make a Difference, that I wrote to remind me of the absolute truth. I belong. We all belong. Any thoughts or evidence to the contrary is misguided. I called this section, Connection and Support from Self and Others.

"We all have moments or even periods when we feel isolated. We see life dimly, as if peering through a veil. We can't connect to others and our lives feel pointless. The following statement of well-being offers support when we feel alone, feel like our needs and wants are not valid or acceptable, or experience ourselves looking from the outside of our lives while trying to get in.

I am a good person and people know it. I know it. My pure intentions are recognized and cherished. I am a lovable woman/man/person who is wanted as a part of the human family. I am loved, and I belong. The men/women/people I love give me quality time. It is safe for me to be intimate (emotionally close) with my friends, significant others, and my family. Women/Men/People support me.

I am a powerful person. I am so powerful that I can easily receive support and still remain free and independent. I not only feel safe and sane around the people I love; I feel empowered as a force of love. I always have what I need for my soul because the universe is well-stocked. My way is the right way for me. I don't have to apologize for or defend my point of view. Your way is the right way for you and I don't have to convert you to my point of view. We can see things differently and still respect, love, and admire each other. I relax, knowing that my beliefs align with the master plan of well-being. I rest in the stillness. My mind is quieter now and I am at peace. So be it."

The above is simplistic, but it points the way to an unusual kind of freedom – the freedom to follow our nature. Belonging is our nature, and when we don't experience our belonging, we go against our nature. If we want to experience belonging, we have to own it. We must root out the thought that we are life's outsiders. We must see the human family as one family. We have to quit telling ourselves the story that we don't belong and embrace our human family (and our animal, tree, fish, rock, river, etc. families), because when we do, life becomes EZier and EZier.

Move It Techniques

I am an avid mover. Unless we keep our bodies moving, our health suffers drastically. But suppose you are sick or paralyzed? Is there something you can do? Yes. Pretend you are moving. Visualize yourself running, doing sit ups, or swimming. The thoughts we give to our brain affects our muscles, and they react as if they have exercised.

Suppose you just don't want to exercise. What then? When I lose my exercise mojo and don't want to exercise, I picture myself moving, and, after a couple of days, I find that picturing myself moving motivates me to move. I don't have to force myself; it comes naturally, once I've mind-practiced first. In plain terms, when we picture ourselves exercising, we are more likely to exercise.

How about moving when we are in bed? Yes. Absolutely!

  • While lying down, stretch like a cat. Do this first thing upon awakening.
  • While lying down, inhale as you raise your arms above your head and exhale as you lower your arms back to the downward position. Repeat five times. You may have to scoot down in the bed some, so you won't hit the wall!
  • While lying down, pull your knees to your chest and then slowly drop them down on the left side and rest 10 seconds, then slowly pull them over to the right side and hold for 10 seconds. This gives you a nice spinal twist.
  • Move your feet up and down 5 times. Then do 5 ankle circles to the right and five ankle circles to the left.
  • Rub your tummy deeply in a circular motion 15 times. This massages the organs.

The above exercises take less than 5 minutes, they get the circulation going, and they shoo the sleepies away. If you don't have time to move or you just can't motivate yourself to do so, try some of the above easy and simple methods. Moving just a little will bring great rewards and make your life EZier and EZier.
