  The Anne Report

Insights From 70 Years Out

Dear ,

I've come through multiple birthday celebrations. I made such a big deal about being 60, but, fortunately, I moved into my 7th decade with ease and grace. I keep meeting older people who are active, vibrant, and cool. They set a good example for me.

Tomorrow we go back to South Carolina to twin-sit. We love the grandbabies. We are in our 4th grandbaby years and it is wonderful to see my grands. And it is amazing to see the world again through 4-year-old eyes. I constantly tell grandkid stories and Jim thinks I'm overboard with my assessment. "You think everything they say is clever and bright." And he's right. There are none more clever or bright.

The political drama and the political divide in the United States seem to grow wider, deeper, and louder. It is interesting to see the continuing growing pains our democracy endures, but, as an EZosophist, I spy a lot of people addicted to angry, righteous drama. Too many people use issues as a forum for their personal defectiveness. They pick an issue, use their mouths like a gun, and shoot. We need to stand up for what we believe, stay informed, act when we can, and vote, but we don't need to turn those who believe differently into enemies. When we have an enemy, we lose, because our hearts suffer the consequence immediately. Being kind to everyone, no one excluded, is the work of angels, and if we are not willing to be angels, we are aiming too low. A famous person once said, "Love your enemies." It seems like a great idea, because when we do this, our lives are always EZier and EZier. That's it for the Anne Report.

I Am That I Am - Our Relationship with Ourselves

The path to enlightenment takes a thousand winding turns. Do we stand and reach our arms to the heavens or do we get on our knees and humble ourselves to Source? Our needs differ, depending on our circumstances and sense of self. Some aspects of the journey require we drop our personal stories, restore humility, and come crawling to the ground of being. At other times we must pick ourselves up and strengthen our identities, only to once again surrender and let go. The medicine for each part of the journey differs and there's no one prescription. Even more paradoxical, the road leads nowhere because we are already at the place we seek. We are already who we want to be.

When we become more conscious of our mental and emotional workings and start to feel better about ourselves, the self-hatred, guilt, and fear we've been suppressing ascends. Ironically, when we have good self-esteem, we can more fully confront and deal with our sense of brokenness. We appear more fragile than ever when we face our shadow elements. The shadow is simply the parts of our personality that we've hidden from ourselves. Our friends might be able to see these parts, but we remain oblivious to their existence. Looking at our shadows often seems like backsliding, but it's these inner confrontations and realizations that build the foundation of our ascent into peace. We take the mud, mold it into bricks, then we build our stairway to heaven.

Along the way, everyone deals with self-esteem issues. Affirmations are great for healing conscious and subconscious messages of low self-worth. Affirmations are not the way; they are a way. They are fallible, but effective, tools of change.

The words we use with "I am'" are powerful. They create our day to day experience of life. "I am" is a direct affirmation of being, but when we say, "I am silly," "I am fat," or "I am stupid," we use the power of the "I am" in ways that diminish our self-worth.

When we think poorly of ourselves, we are mentally ill. Mental illness is rampant in all parts of our society. This illness ranges from those who are committed to an institution to those who criticize themselves and expect perfection.

The following affirmations root out the unconscious patterns of low self-esteem and guilt. When we don't feel good about ourselves, we punish ourselves through guilt. "I am innocent" is a power affirmation that washes away guilt. Saying an affirmation is the first step in making a change, but feeling what it feels like to accept our innocence is the act that delivers us to the promised land of well-being.

Ultimately, it is not the words we use that make a difference in our lives. It is the feeling nature behind any word that holds the most power. Yet, when we first start using affirmations, we want to take notice of what we are unconsciously affirming with our words and change our languaging. After we get somewhat enlightened, or more at ease with life and ourselves, we don't have to be as careful with our words, because the words themselves are pointers to something much deeper. When that which is deep is healed, tools and techniques naturally fall away.

The following "I am" affirmations are the recognition of the absolute truth about ourselves. These truths are not to be used to feed the egoic mind, but to remind us of our natural state of being. We are not our behaviors, our bodies, or our minds. We are not our bank account or the amount of power we have in the world. We are spiritual beings navigating the world while walking the path back to the Source. Re-read the chapter on Qualifiers in Anne's book, Words Make a Difference, if you find any of the ideas below hard to believe, as they are written. Qualifiers modify the affirmation to make them more believable. Here's the truth about us.

10 Steps to Focus Your Activities*

  1. Write down everything you would like to achieve. Include small and large things as well as emotional and psychological goals. Spend time on this. Add to the list from time to time. I suggest you put all your work in one spiral notebook or a three-ring binder. Do all your work on this in the same place. Organize it. Make a cover for your book that excites you or reflects your values. I have a picture of a large four-leaf clover on the front of my book, with the words "Luck is everywhere." Quote by Gangaji
  2. Choose 12 things you want now. What things are most important to you? Write them down. Put each one on a separate piece of paper.
  3. Be open to change. Ask every day, "GUS**, what must I change about myself in order to manifest these things in my life?" Ask this question for each one of the 12 goals. Listen and record what you hear, on that goal's page.
  4. Put a date with each goal. This gives the subconscious mind and GUS time to get things together, on your behalf. We have timelines for almost everything in our lives. For example, you will cook your dinner for tonight by a certain time; you will buy that special outfit prior to the special occasion.
  5. Read over the list three times in the morning. Read it out loud at least one time a day, if feasible.
  6. Develop a consciousness for the desired result. Picture yourself having the desired results. Hear it. Imagine yourself telling your best friend, "Wow, my papers are in such great order." Or "it's so great to be vital and alive. I wake up every morning excited, knowing what I want to do and flowing into a miraculous activity." Feel the feelings you would feel when you have this thing or achieve this state. Picture it as so.
  7. Take positive action toward your goals. Just pick one thing and do something toward that goal.
  8. Don't tell everyone about your goals so as not to dilute the process. Be sure not to mention anything to those that you know are skeptical about life. They will bleed their attitudes onto your projects. Only share with those who join with you in your success. It's fine to not tell anyone. Just don't be secretive about them. That sets an unhealthy dynamic also. The bottom line: use discretion when sharing your goals.
  9. Check your goal page when you achieve the goal and keep the page so as to remind you how awesome this process really is. Add a new page to replace the accomplished goal.
  10. The highest law is love. It operates on your behalf 24 hours a day. You can trust it in all of your affairs. Because love guards you and looks after you and ultimately brings you the best, you reside in infinite safety. Remember this when things are going counter to your desires. Nothing, no person, place, or situation, can stand in the way of your highest good.

This group is a place to post uplifting affirmations and thoughts about prosperity and abundant living. Let's create a right relationship with money so that we feel comfortable about money. Let's use money as it's meant to be used, and not as a way to accumulate power or to fill a void. We don't need money to buy more stuff. We need it to create a world that works for everyone. We want to cast off old beliefs of lack and reclaim our natural state of abundance.
