  The Anne Report

The Anne Report

Dear ,

Saturday was a wonderful day. We went out on the maiden voyage of the new family boat. Though it is my daughter’s and some in-laws’ boat, I consider it the family boat. Yes, it is winter, but with the sun out, five layers of clothes, gloves, and a mask, no problem! It is not the expected winter activity, yet it was invigorating to be on the water. We saw dolphins playing and several types of water birds.

Though we are no longer in the Houston area, we are in touch with many friends who have been in the recent winter storm. My friend, Mary, has a whole house generator. At one point she had her brother and sister-in-law, her cousin and his wife, and a close friend staying in her home. That is a lot, but add 8 dogs, 3 cats, and a bird, and you have an animal sanctuary and hotel. I received texts with photos of ceilings falling from burst pipes and frozen water inside the house. Just when Houston was getting over Hurricane Harvey, another climate disaster. My heart goes out to all of Texas and the states affected by this winter storm. We feel for our friends and loved ones but are grateful that we missed another bullet. We are safe in South Carolina. This was not really the time for me to deal with another crisis. I have met my crisis quota for the decade. And that’s it for the Anne Report.

  Main Article

Homage to Womankind

I recently heard Elizabeth Lesser speak (thank God for Zoom), on the effects of patriarchy and the way we tell our stories. Her story of the Garden of Eden had me sitting on the edge of my seat. I will retell it here, though much of this is my elaboration.

Adam and Eve are happy for a while, in the garden, but Eve starts to feel that call. There must be more to life than this place. She is tipped off that if she eats an apple, untold secrets will emerge. She is advised that her horizons will expand and when she partakes of this fruit, many adventures await her in a brand-new world. She knows this is her destiny. She runs to Adam to speak of her plan. He is aghast. He has no clue anything is wrong. “I thought everything was okay.” He is the eternal youth who wants to play day and night. He chooses to eat, play, and sleep, and that is enough for him. Eve is tired of his immature behavior. She eats the apple and goes off on her journey.

If Adam had been the one to go off on the same journey, and it was told from a male’s perspective, it would be called the Hero’s journey. The hero, who would have been Adam, would have found the good and bad that life offers. He would have gone though the dark night of the soul and emerged as a warrior, an enlightened being, or who knows what, but certainly not a villain.

Though you may be a male reading this, you surely know that there is something amiss in the way women and the feminine are held in a white male dominated society. It is refreshing when some of our more enlightened males are sensitive to the issue. I recently listened to a male spiritual leader tell two parables. The central figure in both was female. I smiled inwardly. While parables and metaphors could be told using either gender, most are told through a masculine lens, and the heroes and central figures are male.

I was privileged to hear Bella Abzug speak in 1992 at a Women’s Convocation focused on the environment. She spoke about how women had to clean up the earth. “It is always the women who clean up,” she said, “and we can be sure a woman did not create the atomic bomb. It is impossible to clean up the waste.” I think of Harold Simmons’ nuclear waste dump that sits over the largest interior aquifer in the United States. He was 80 when he built it and worth millions of dollars at the time. He passed away at age 82, but his legacy lives on. What was he thinking?

When people are under stress, their response is to flee or to fight. It is called fight or flight. Shelley E. Taylor noticed that the original studies on stress responses were conducted on men. When she led a study on women, a different pattern of behavior emerged. Women were more likely to tend and befriend when under stress. They tend to their young ones, protect them, and seek out their social circles for help. Tending for their young tends to calm them down. It does not predispose them to attack. The handling of this kind of study illustrates how unrepresentative our stories are and how an unequal share of power affects our society.

Woman are paid 81 cents for the same work that a man gets paid a dollar to do, and men still refuse to vote for gender pay equity. What stands behind these decisions? What holds such a disparate system in place? I am not asking anyone to do anything about this phenomenon, though some might choose to act. My purpose is to raise awareness. But, if you want to help, please use gender inclusive language.

It is time for our stories to be rewritten. Here is an example of a prayer written from my perspective, which is undoubtedly female. May it lift the hearts of all and be given the same consideration as those prayers written by our male beloveds.

O Birther! Mother of the Cosmos

Focus your light within us: make it useful.
Create your reign of unity now, through our fiery hearts and willing hands.
Help us to love beyond our ideals.

Empower us to act with compassion for all creatures.
Animate the earth within us. May we live from the wisdom that undergirds all life.
Untangle the knots within so that we can mend our hearts’ connection to each other.

Do not let surface things delude us,
but free us from what holds us back from our true purpose.

We serve you, the astonishing fire of life.
We are always returning to your love. Amen.

This group is a place to post uplifting affirmations and thoughts about prosperity and abundant living. Let’s create a right relationship with money so that we feel comfortable about money. Let’s use money as it’s meant to be used, and not as a way to accumulate power or to fill a void. We don’t need money to buy more stuff. We need it to create a world that works for everyone. We want to cast off old beliefs of lack and reclaim our natural state of abundance. Anne, AKA Dr. Money, posts a nightly goodnight video for the prosperity team, and everyone who watches those videos becomes a part of the prosperity team.
