  The Anne Report

The Anne Report

Dear ,

Saturday we had a great time going out on the family boat. We went up the Wando River and saw one of the world’s largest container ships, the Marco Polo. It is more than 1,300 feet long and can carry 16,022 containers. After seeing the legendary ship, we landed at No Name Island, ate lunch, walked, and returned home.

Sunday the boys came over to spend the night. I awakened Monday morning with Reynolds, standing next to the bed, saying “Grand MaMa, why doesn’t Carla eat the fish?” “Who is Carla?” I asked. “She’s Hoppy’s cat.” Then I remembered the pet cat in my epic story of the Hoppy, the Poppy Frog family. There are so many characters in this ongoing tale that I cannot keep up with them. The story has been going on for more than two years. In last night’s tale, the frog family got an aquarium with ten fish. I explained that the aquarium was sitting on a cabinet that was too high for Carla to reach. That satisfied Reynold’s curiosity. Soon Thomas and Reynolds were in bed and we discussed the frog family’s adventures. Reynolds said, “I really enjoyed the story you told last night, Grand MaMa.” “Awe,” I thought, as my heart melted once more. Much of the content of the frog stories depends on what movie they have recently watched. We watched Find Dory Sunday. I started the story announcing it was the frog’s birthday and they asked if the frogs could get fish as their gift. I replied yes, and off we were, running with a new episode of the Hoppy the Poppy Frog family. Each Hoppy story is a wild ride because the boys become a part of the story with their jumping, squealing, and begging for certain content.

As you might have guessed, my favorite career is being their grandmother. That’s what Reynolds told his mom when Thomas asked what my career was. He knew what my favorite career was, and he was right; being a grandmother is my favorite career. And that’s it for the Anne report.

Enlightenment: To Read Or Not To Read

There have been several times in my life when I had a significant awakening. My perspective changed almost instantly as hefty burdens lifted from my tired shoulders. Then, slowly, other burdens took their place. The load became progressively lighter, but regardless of my efforts to escape the condition of being human and my desire to arrive at that permanent state of nirvana, my attempts never bore fruit. Like other seekers before me, I began to question the whole idea of enlightenment. Of course, with this inquiry came the need to question seeking. Should we seek for what is, or should we rest where we are, and discover that what is, is always where we are? Is enlightenment a mythical state, reserved for the gods, or do humans ever reach that point? So many questions. Yet, in my defense, I think the right questions are doorways that lead us past the confines of confusion. Some questions open the mind so much that even considering an answer seems ridiculous. How about that?

I love to read. Yes, I know the typical enlightened take on reading. We do not need to get more information to get where we want to go, because we are already there. I do not think I read to get enlightened. Maybe I am fooling myself. I think I read for entertainment and inspiration. In full disclosure, I know the tricks of the ego. I could be pining for enlightenment and using reading to get myself spirituality fit. That means I would be working toward either a nonexistent state or a state I already have obtained. The egoic mind uses our best against us. It enlists our cleverness to hide the truth that we live in a hypnotic state of denial. Who knows? I might be an enlightenment junkie masquerading as a non-attached Buddhist! Back to the topic – reading a good book. Give me a good story line with time travel or magic and I think I am in nirvana. Yet, in my garden of words are books that inspire, books that melt my heart, and books that are sacred, if only to me. Some books are so deep and rich that I can stand in them and shout hallelujah, while getting my feet muddy with reality.

Twice in my life I have reached a state of such supreme fulfillment that I quit reading. I could see how reading was unnecessary. Why read when one can bask in the joy of living. Nothing more was needed, because I felt so complete. But slowly, as I re-entered the world of adventure and possibility, I found my love of books returning. I was elated when I heard Rick Archer, the consummate spiritual talk show host, mention that Adyashanti, whom I greatly admire, has books strewn everywhere. They are dog-eared and well read. I could have hugged Rick when I heard this. Even enlightened people read books, even if, technically, there are no enlightened people. Another thought, while I am shooting arrows into this haphazard philosophical inquiry: “Maybe we are all enlightened, but just do not know it.” One philosopher says that enlightenment occurred in consciousness when we developed the capacity to be aware of ourselves. The emergence of awareness ushered in the enlightenment of the human race. What a great idea. We are all already enlightened.

But does enlightenment bring what we’ve hoped for. Adyashanti says, Do not think that enlightenment is going to make you special; it’s not. If you feel special in any way, then enlightenment has not occurred. I meet a lot of people who think they are enlightened and awake simply because they have had a very moving spiritual experience. They wear their enlightenment on their sleeve, like a badge of honor. They sit among friends and talk about how awake they are while sipping coffee at a cafe. The funny thing about enlightenment is that when it is authentic, there is no one to claim it. Enlightenment is very ordinary; it is nothing special. Rather than making you more special, it is going to make you less special. It plants you right in the center of a wonderful humility and innocence. Everyone else may or may not call you enlightened, but when you are enlightened, the whole notion of enlightenment and someone who is enlightened is a big joke. I use the word enlightenment all the time; not to point you toward it, but to point you beyond it. Do not get stuck in enlightenment.” And Adya also expounds, “Enlightenment is nothing more than the complete absence of resistance to what is. End of story.”

Who knows about enlightenment? No one, because when we are enlightened, we do not claim it as some sort of badge of accomplishment; we just live in a state of nonresistance, and there is a lot of latitude in nonresistance. Consequently, whether I am enlightened or not, I will continue my love of certain books and will place one foot before the next, in this process of living, and expect that when I live in this less encumbered way, that life becomes EZier and EZier.

This group is a place to post uplifting affirmations and thoughts about prosperity and abundant living. Let’s create a right relationship with money so that we feel comfortable about money. Let’s use money as it’s meant to be used, and not as a way to accumulate power or to fill a void. We don’t need money to buy more stuff. We need it to create a world that works for everyone. We want to cast off old beliefs of lack and reclaim our natural state of abundance. Anne, AKA Dr. Money, posts a nightly goodnight video for the prosperity team, and everyone who watches those videos becomes a part of the prosperity team.
