  A Note From Anne

Dear ,

I’m excited to be going to the Parliament of the World’s Religions this week. It’s in Salt Lake City. While I am disappointed that the Dalai Lama, our keynote speaker, will probably not be able to attend, I am excited to reunite with an old friend. My friend Karen and I were inseparable for many years, but life pulled us apart, and the fact that we lived on opposite sides of the country made it even more difficult to connect. It’s been more than 25 years since we’ve seen each other and we are excited to reconnect and to join with others who value social welfare, social justice, sustainable living, and women’s rights.

It’s a dream come true for me. The last parliament held in the U.S. was in 1993 and I missed it. I lamented that loss for way too long, but finally I get to realize one of my lifetime dreams – to attend a parliament. We will also attend the Inaugural Women’s Assembly, which precedes the parliament. The first parliament was held in 1893 in Chicago. The purpose is to create a global dialogue of faiths. I have my bells on and will be leaving tomorrow. Here I come, Salt Lake.

  Love Has No Conditions

“I questioned what I believed about you. You transformed immediately. You are amazing!” Byron Katie

The word “love” does not need to be preceded by the adjective “unconditional.” Conditional love is not love. The thoughts behind the words “conditional love” are: “If you do things my way, I will like you. If I approve of what you are thinking, saying, and doing, I will not be angry with you and you will escape the guilt and shame of existence. And if you feel guilty, it will not be on my account, because I am completely supportive of you, if you support me in every way imaginable.” I think I’ll go for just plain love, but conditional love seems to be “the catch of the day.”

Romantic love is a high energy euphoria that dissipates after a couple falls back into their customary states of separation. Romantic love is a fun, wild ride until the roller-coaster ride grinds to a creepy crawl or stops all together. This might be a good thing. Can you imagine a symphony not moving on? The orchestra replays the overture over and over. That’s how it would be if people repeatedly relived the opening of a relationship. The relationship wouldn’t move on.

What happens when a healthy relationship moves on from one stage of love to another? It grows; it transforms. It moves to the second act. What kind of vision and attitude support growth in a relationship?

The following is a visionary statement that gives that “relationship kind of love” we call Eros the room it needs to transform into agape. Agape is just plain love – no demands, no conditions, just love always.

Affirmative Relationship Thoughts – The Promise

I can’t see who you used to be, because I am focused on who you are now. I won’t hold you hostage to the past, nor pigeonhole you as never changing. I will see you as fresh and adorable. I see you as a loving, lovable, and supportive person. I commit to looking deeply and finding the best in you. I will hardly notice when you do me wrong. I only blow your good attributes out of proportion. I look only for signs of deep love and compassion growing in you. I will not assassinate our relationship through jealousy, gossip, or harshness. I will not compare our relationship to others. I daily plant seeds of gentleness and loving kindness in my heart and share the fruit with you. I take responsibility for love in my life, and I spread that love in all my relationships. So be it.

Love is still an inside job; love is always present. Our work is to keep our emotions and thoughts out of the way so we can see the Loving Presence of life.

Humming for Your Health

We all know how to hum, but how many of us actually hum? Only occasionally do I hum, but I’m thinking about doing more humming. Maybe I’ll become a humdinger!

Humming is good for our heart, reduces blood pressure, and relieves stress. Humming brings clarity to the mind and it slows down our thinking. When your mind races, try a little humming. It can settle you down.

Humming tends to lift our moods and often puts a smile on our faces. It helps clear our sinuses. It slows our breathing. Humming takes the focus off our problems.

You can create a humming meditation by putting your hands over your ears while humming to the m sound.  “MMMM.”

We live in such a stress filled culture that we have to be intentional about caring for our bodies, minds, and emotions. People rarely sit and watch waterfalls, but millions watch the news. And there’s rarely good news! We face traffic, pollution, and weather challenges. Humming provides a fast and easy way out. Don’t just read this. Try humming to one of your favorite tunes. Humming is a rejuvenating practice. I know you’ll love it.
