  A Note From Anne

Dear ,

The Christmas decorations are in place and I am looking forward to spending the holidays with my grand twins. Patience pats my head; we thought we would have been able to move by now. People look shocked when they see us. “Are you here for a visit?” We laugh. Although we look forward to moving, it’s refreshing to have a clear calendar and a clean house.

There’s a luxurious opening I’m living in. Life feels simple and easy. Yet I’m doing plenty of things; they are just low pressure things, like house cleaning, meeting with friends, a little traveling, and writing.

Here’s hoping that the call to sanity reaches everyone this holiday. The crime, the murders, terrorism – all reflect the soul’s journey into darkness. We can be hardened by events of the world, or we can use them to open our hearts to a deeper level of grace and compassion. People who have been hurt, hurt others.

Let us remember to be kind this season. Let’s abolish impatience and glorify inclusiveness. Let’s applaud originality and crucify self-criticism. Let’s celebrate diversity and dissolve xenophobia. During this season of love let’s appreciate our friends and family. Let us be the living example of the light. We are the hope of the world and we must let our hearts rise. It’s time to be the leaders of a world that honors life and supports everyone. Happy Holidays.

  Surrender to Source

Words come like drops of love and spread over the screen, begging for form. I sit in my backyard; there’s buzzing. It’s the price of the picture perfect yards that surround me. The winds sing quietly, my dog sleeps near my feet, and I wonder about this mystery. What is it that keeps life traveling in so many surprising ways? People say it is God, but since I don’t think of God as an entity—I think of God as more like a force, a principle, or universal law—it gives me room to question. I question not from an intellectual curiosity, but from a hunger to know my Source. And as I sit in the relative quiet solitude of my back yard, the buzzing only a memory, I drink in this perfect day. Whatever it is that puts form together, moves particles, creates energy, and sustains life, this is what I serve. It has no name, no face, and yet it is more intimate than the sweetest of lovers.

A few days ago, as I walked my adorable dog, Lucy, I surrendered to this Source. For me, an ongoing sense of surrender is necessary, but that day it was a deeper surrender. As I walked the tree-lined path, I became one with all there is and gave myself to that. I would serve this deeply throughout the day and listen, as best I could, to the hunches that emanated from deep within.

When I arrived home, I started my arm exercises, but was interrupted by an almost urgent thought, “Can I write a children’s book?” The next thought was, “Wouldn’t Mrs. Dominoes be a great character?” Thoughts assailed me and I ran for pen and paper. I wrote and wrote about this most amazing Mrs. Dominoes. It was so easy to enter Mrs. Dominoes’ world of wonder and magic. The ideas came so fast I dared not leave the kitchen island. So I stood, suspended by an incredulous wonder, and gave this wonderful woman life. When pen dropped to paper, an entire children’s book rested atop my kitchen island. I felt the flow of miracle and ran up the stairs to share with my husband, Jim. I read aloud, and my normally solitaire playing, hooked to the computer screen husband, eventually ceased his activity, and listened with full attention. I finished reading and he practically cried out, “You must publish it. You must get an illustrator.”

Today I ponder the wonder of creation—how we are connected to an infinite well-spring of life, love, and ideas, and for this I give thanks. I am thankful for this wonderful woman, Mrs. Dominoes, and for being midwife at her birth, but I am more grateful for the life that lies under all of creation.

I have found, in these short 67 years of living, that serving the Source takes three things: surrender, healing the need to be noticed and important, and a longing to play an integral part in the game of life. Maybe that is only a formula for my life, but I have found that when I let my ego rest, turn over my expectations and desires to the Source, and follow that innate longing to belong in the game of life, that my life is EZier and EZier.

Daily Jump Starter

Want to jump start your day? Need energy? Try these three things to get you going.

  1. You can do this while still in bed or standing. Raise your arms up, all the way from the body, not just from the elbows, and then lower them. Breathe in deeply as you raise your arms and exhale as you lower your arms. Do this five times.
  2. Make two fists and tap the top of your head 30 times with your fists.
  3. Massage the top part of your neck, where it joins your head, with your fingertips, for 20 seconds.

You’ll be surprised how you feel after these short exercises. You can even do them while in bed. They get you going and you can do them in less than 5 minutes. How easy is that?
