  A Note From Anne

Our Ageless Mind

Dear ,

Tomorrow I head to North Carolina for my 50th class reunion. It seems like it was not long ago, when I was in my early 20's, that I imagined what it would be like to be old. I was thinking of 50 as old! I imagined looking in the mirror and seeing wrinkled skin and an old woman. I wondered how I would deal with that. Little did I realize that even though my body would age, my mind would not. I would be the same me at 50 that looked in the mirror at 20. Now at 67, I, not my body, feel the same as I did 40 years ago.

Today I visited a friend who has terminal brain cancer. He was heavily sedated, but oddly enough was lucid. His memory and sense of humor were intact. There were many friends visiting; the room was filled with light and delight. His fragile body didn't define him and even though he may have only a few days left on earth, he is still living fully.

I am continually amazed at the ebb and flow of life. We seem to think that the action is at the beginning, but maybe the miracle of life is as strong at the end as it is in the beginning. And maybe, just like a 20 year-old who can't understand the expansiveness of consciousness, we don't understand what it's like to outgrow our bodies, and we probably won't until we get there. I wish my friend could give me the scoop when he crosses over, but I guess I'll just have to wait my turn.

The More of Less

Remember that rain I was talking about last week? It created havoc in this area. It did flood, but we are high and dry. Thunder sounds in the background as I write this and one friend tells me she is flooding again. This is a saga we might call, "The Rise and the Fall and the Rise and the Fall and the Rise and the Fall of the Water in Metro Houston."

I spent the other day helping a friend haul wet and smelly items from her home to her curb. About ten or more friends supported her and made on the spot decisions about what to do with everything. We hauled items to the curb, took pictures to verify her loss, and empathized with her. An adjuster from the National Flood Insurance Program showed up and took more pictures and explained the claims process. At this point, for my friend, the idea of loss was on the back burner as her energy was taken up by getting organized, letting go, and making a thousand decisions. "Yes, this goes. No, keep this." She no longer cared what was saved or what went in the trash. There were too many things for her to decide, so we did the best we could with making her decisions. Unfortunately, too many people in my area are undergoing involuntary down-sizing or de-materializing.

As I watched my friend's possessions parade before me, the Universe spoke. "Anne, you need to get rid of more stuff." We live in a world where we confuse excess with success and I am undergoing a reeducation process. We eat too much food, buy too much food, buy too many things, and keep things that we never use. More than ten percent of our population rent storage space and most people can't get their car in the garage. I am an integral part of that "we."

Hypnosis: Buy, Buy, Buy

Jesus said in Mathew 19:21, "If you want to be perfect, go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me." When I was young, I thought that was old-fashioned, out-of-date advice. Looking back, I can see the wisdom of those words. Maybe he meant that our stuff gets in the way of our happiness and our self-realization. Maybe he meant that when we spend most of our time buying, clearing, organizing, and taking care of our stuff, we actually miss life itself.

Jim, my husband, and I are watching episodes that feature tiny houses. I'm indoctrinating myself with the less is more philosophy. I'm reading "The More of Less" by Joshua Becker. It's about selling things and giving away items. This transformation is more like a transition, and the book and the tiny house programs are my "Less is More" cheerleaders. When we live in a culture that thrives in the pursuit of more, different, and better, I need radical help. I'm sticking to this change. I am sure that with my new attitude toward things and my intention to rid myself of things I don't need, that my life will become EZier and EZier.

  Healthy Living

Affirmative Statement of Health

Recently I watched a show about a woman with pancreatic cancer. This is frequently a fast acting and terminal cancer. The woman was given 2 months to live. She fought the disease, and even though her body eventually succumbed to the disease, she lived more than two years after the diagnosis.

My sister had a friend who was diagnosed with terminal cancer. He quit his job, bought a sail boat, and headed around the world. Everyone was surprised when his medical examination showed no signs of cancer.

Many medical doctors and even more witch doctors know the powerful relationship between the body and the mind. The placebo effect shows that the belief that one is taking a miracle drug is just as successful as taking the actual drug itself.

The statement below offers a mental template for health. Drink in these thoughts on a daily basis for 30 days, and as you increase your belief in your body and its ability to heal itself, you just may find that your body reacts with increased vitality and well-being.

Affirmative Statement of Health

My life is in perfect balance and harmony. My body reflects my peaceful countenance through its radiant appearance and robust health. My mind supports higher and higher states of well-being. My thoughts and emotions are aligned with health. My body is becoming healthier and healthier every day.

My body is a chemical factory producing magical elixirs of health and aliveness. All patterns of DNA and RNA maintain their original pattern of perfection and this pattern reorders my body to a higher level of health. All chemical, hormonal, and biological functions are in a perfect, healthy flow. All systems, organs, and structures are in outstanding working order. My breath is easy and free. I am flexible and move with grace and ease. Every day I am more and more fit. I am the perfect weight for me. My muscles and bones are powerful and strong. I perform my daily physical activities with ease.

I operate with thoughts of well-being which manifests as physical health. I think of my body with love and generosity. I eat well, exercise, and get plenty of rest. I am ageless, and the aging process is slowing down and reversing. My cells are getting younger and more light-filled.

There is a miraculous spirit guiding all my bodily functions. I surrender and respect this revitalizing, regenerative force. I forgive my body for any disease or any physical imperfection I might have now or in the past and direct my thoughts toward harmony and to the pattern for perfect health that resides within. I feel vibrantly alive, at home, and comfortable in my body. My body brings pleasure. My body is a safe and comfortable place to be. I give up any payoffs (such as self-punishment or trying to be taken care of) I receive for illness, obesity, anorexia, bulimia, or chemical imbalance and surrender my self-constructed (from subconscious level) dilemma to a Higher Power. I do not need to know how to heal myself; I only need to be completely willing to be healed. I am now completely and without any reservations, willing to be healed, knowing that any benefits and payoffs I receive for being ill will be replaced in ways that are positive and beneficial to my body.

I surrender my body and any lack of ease to my Higher Power. I focus on health and how I would feel if my body were completely healthy. I appreciate all the faithful years of service performed by my body. I am grateful to my body. My body is miraculous. I relax into a new and renewed state of health and wellness. It is so. Yes.

The Affirmative Statement for Health is excerpted from my upcoming book, Magical Words: Affirmations, Visionary Statements, and Revolutionary Ideas for Everyone and Everything.
