  A Note From Anne

I’m a Book Sales Person Again

Dear ,

The book sales for Words Make a Difference are going well. The Kindle copies have some formatting problems, at least on some of the devices they are displayed on, but the content is still good. You can download the free Kindle copy through tonight, 8/23/2016.

If you would like to organize a book signing and reading in your home, business, or center and you are relatively close to the Houston area, let me know and I’ll come over. I once asked a healer if he was going to write a book. He replied, “Why would I write a book? I’m a healer. If I wrote a book, then I would have to sell a book and I wouldn’t have time to be a healer.” He was very famous in India. People from all over the world came to learn his wisdom, but if they learned anything from him, it was transmitted through the oral tradition. All this is to say that I did another book and now I am a sales person!

I enjoyed speaking at Carmel Temple in South Houston, Texas, on Sunday morning, 8/21/2016. I met my husband, Jim Gibson, and my editor, Charles Heineke, there in 1998.

My sister is near her transition time. We expect it to be any day now. She has cancer and has been in full-blown dementia for a few years now. It’s time. Please send her a little prayer. Her name is Jo.

Living in the Now

Check into your life right now. Do you want to be in your life right now? In this very moment? If not, what is your resistance? The degree to which we resist being present in our lives, in this very moment, decides how much life force, presence, or light is available. When we step into each moment, demanding things be different, we hold the moment hostage. We say to the moment, “If you don’t behave like I want you to, then I’m out of here.” The egoic mind takes us on a perpetual hunting expedition for what would make the moment better. It’s a useless search. The moment can never be better; it’s already perfect. That’s why we seek what we already have. Nothing is wrong with the moment; it’s our vision that is occluded.

The situation to ponder is, “Since the ongoing presence of love is maximally present in this moment, I need to decide if I really want the peace-that-passes-understanding or not. If I do want peace, then I have to reinsert myself into the grace space of wonder, peace, and fulfillment.” If we can’t see the light, it is because our light is so dim. When we are in the dark, it’s time to stand close to someone whose light is bright. It doesn’t matter who the light comes from, or through what channel it shines. All light comes from the same source. It can come to us at a meeting, come through a book, or through something someone says. The light is shining everywhere, and the place to look for it is where we can see it. Slowing the mind, and looking under the words, beliefs, and emotions, is the first place to look, but when we are stuck and can’t go directly to the stillness, to the source, we need to do something else.

Yesterday, I visited a Hindu temple complex for lunch. I love Indian food and was in the neighborhood. After lunch, I was on the way to the bathroom when I spotted a museum. I had to explore. The museum housed a display of the contributions of the Indian culture to the world. They included medicine, physics, astronomy, and more. They could sew an ear back on 300 years ago! Indians were the first plastic surgeons. I saw a similar museum in New Delhi and was excited to see a local display featuring these accomplishments. The energy in the place was amazing. I felt like I was standing in the light. It was a dark, rainy day, and much of it I’d spent waiting for something, so I wasn’t in the brightest of spaces, but the energy of the place was undeniable, at least to me, because I wanted it. The Shakti (energy) was so powerful I could barely look at the displays. I was on fire. I wanted the moment to shine. I wanted to see and feel the brilliance of the light, and I did. I remembered the Presence was there, that this light is always here, and I wanted to rejoin its resting place.

Places where people pray, meditate, or study the deeper questions of life radiate this energy. When we can’t find the light within, it’s time to be in the places and spaces that recharge the moment and remove the mental debris that shields it. Some people love the seashore, others the mountains, and others drink in the printed words of the master. Music can rekindle the flame of the moment, as can thoughts of appreciation.

When we are not experiencing the light and love the universe unconditionally emanates, it’s because we are not present and we do not know that we have instant access to the joy that spins the universe. This is the actual secret of the ages. Many people think the secret is that we create our reality, but the real secret is that we have instant access to the source and in that access all suffering and longing ceases.

Every religion tells us to seek, in some way, usually their way, access to the present and Presence. Most religions are so messed up these days with onerous requirements, that the good news they proclaim is hidden under that old basket. Today, millions seek the non-traditional path of spiritual awakening. We are no longer interested in dead end paths. We want that which serves all and passionately loves all, and we want it now. The good news, the really good news, is that it is available now. We can tune in, anybody can tune in, and when we do, our lives are always EZier and EZier.

  Quotes

"I am nailed to two spots: one in which I feel ashamed and not enough; the other in which I feel a false sense of superiority and pride. Even though the ego is a poor carpenter, it can still make a good cross. Ego driven suffering nails us to the past, sucks the life out of the present, and spits us out in the future. Fueled by misperceptions, the ego stays poised to help us stay in our misery. Only love can remove these false egoic opinions and return us to our true nature. Love dissolves the ego and delivers us home. And there’s nothing like homecoming. Come home to love now. Stop, if only for a moment, and drink in its ever present essence."
-- Anne Sermons Gillis

"One should forgive, under any injury,” says the Mahabharata. “It hath been said that the continuation of species is due to man’s being forgiving. Forgiveness is holiness; by forgiveness the universe is held together. Forgiveness is the might of the mighty; forgiveness is sacrifice; forgiveness is quiet of mind. Forgiveness and gentleness are the qualities of the self-possessed. They represent eternal virtue."
-- Mahatma Gandhi

"To fully thrive, we must not only eliminate the stressors but also actively seek joyful, loving, fulfilling lives that stimulate growth processes."
-- Bruce Lipton

Hummus Recipe

Years ago I was in a Unity bookstore. I held up a book and, as I glanced through it, the minister, who was present, gave it to me as a present. When I returned home, I opened it and was fascinated. The cookbook title, Romancing the Bean, gives one a clue of the contents. It is more than a cookbook. This book inspires creativity and asks the reader to make the recipe their own. We speak of soul food and that means the cook has plenty of soul, and refers to many southern dishes, but this book helps us put our soul and imagination into cooking. The book gave me my favorite cornbread recipe, an amazing lima bean and corn recipe, beans with wine, curried beans, and the most amazing hummus recipe.

I just made some hummus and had to share the recipe. As usual, I may vary the ingredients to suit my taste, but the bare bones recipe is outstanding. This recipe is for the intrepid cook because finding the umeboshi vinegar (ume plum vinegar) requires a trip to the market, and it is expensive. And, this hummus is hot – at least my version is hot! People call that spicy now, but I prefer the term hot. I think of spice as something like cinnamon, cumin, or turmeric, but the world moved past me and uses the term spicy to mean hot. As far as I can tell, the world has gone mad, but who am I to say? Back to  my comments. I always soak and cook my beans. Canned beans are not in my diet unless I’m eating with someone. I avoid canned foods because there’s not much life force left in them, and most cans have toxic linings which leach into the food.

Ingredients

  • 1 or 2 peeled garlic cloves
  • 2 cups cooked garbanzos
  • 3 tablespoons of raw tahini
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt (You may want to cut down on the salt since the vinegar is salty.)
  • 3 tablespoons of freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 3 tablespoons of umeboshi plum vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon of red pepper flakes (leave out if you don’t like hot)

Put in food processor and blend well. Refrigerate to store. This hummus has pizzazz, and I’ve never tasted a hummus I like better.
