  The Anne Report

Living Life Well

Dear ,

This week finds us in Galveston. We are staying in our RV and having a wonderful time. My friend once said, “Having an RV is like being a member of a club. If you own an RV, you’re in.” We all like to belong. My dog follows me around the house. My husband and I check in with each other during the day. Face it, we are tribal people. This week we are with our RV tribe, and loving it.

Lucy, our dog, has completely recovered from her bone incident. Her appetite is great and there’s no bowel obstruction. She’s barking at some outdoor workers as I write. It’s wonderful to see her frisky and happy again.

I recently found this piece that was published in the magazine called School Life, in 1920. It’s set to the tune of Yankee Doodle. Repeat the opening melody, starting at “These six will gladly you attend” to make the lyrics and melody work together. Just think, in 1920, a song that says taking care of yourself eases your mind. A little EZosophy in the “’20’s!”

The best six doctors anywhere,
And no one can deny it,
Are sunshine, water, rest, and air,
Exercise and diet.

These six will gladly you attend
If only you are willing.
Your mind they'll ease,
Your will they'll mend,
And charge you not a shilling.

That’s all for this week’s report.

Returning Home

Imagine you are on a vast expanse of land. The terrain is rugged. There’s refuse everywhere that forms hills of waste. It’s so hot and humid that water hangs in the air and the foul odor assaults you. You see some color ahead and draw closer. What you see astounds you. It is an exquisite red rose bush. The flower laden branches droop gracefully, touching a small bed of bright green grass. It’s an oasis in the wasteland. You absorb the beauty and breathe the sweetest rose perfume. It’s irresistible. You feel at peace and energized. You could stay forever in the bliss of this experience, and you stay for a while, but eventually you are curious. Maybe there’s something better ahead. You take off and wander far and wide. You sift through the rubbage, looking for a gem or something of value, but find nothing. Day after day you search. One day you realize you’ve rambled so far you don’t remember the way back to the rose bush.

Our minds search in the same way. We search for peace; we know it is around somewhere, but we intentionally search where we know it is not. Rather than focus on beauty, peace, and well-being, our minds flit around in mind garbage until we lose our ability to focus on what’s important.

Just for a moment, call off the search. Rest your mind and ask your guides, angels, Higher Power, Higher Self, the Ascended Masters, Jesus, Buddha, and or the Universe for help in returning home. You can send your request to every deceased family member and friend; just call to something bigger that your small mind – the mind that brought you chaos. This is a call that brings calm to chaos and clarity to confusion. “Help me in this moment to be fully present, aware, and still so that I may enter the Stillness and rest in the Presence.” Then focus on the now, allowing your request to be answered. Expect help; breathe it in. Let the mind relax and surrender. Know that peace is present, behind the veil, and the veil is lifting. Use this petition to bring the rose bush to life in the present. Just for a moment, right now, stop sifting through the garbage. Ask for help often, using your request to refocus. When one finds the inner sanctuary, the rose bush, there’s a radiance and a magnetic quality around them. Become that radiance and magnetism now.

Just as every drop of water eventually returns to the ocean, we will all return to this place of beauty, love, and peace. It is our home; it is our destiny. A Course in Miracles says, “You can refuse to enter, but you cannot close the door Christ holds open.”

Give your mind a safe place, frequently ask for help from a Higher Power, rest in the moment, momentarily give up the search, and when you do, you will always find that life becomes EZier and EZier.

The Living Brain

I am a member of a Master Mind group. There are seven members and the majority of the group can be referred to as older adults. Three of the women in the group have asked for better clarity, focus, and memory. I am one of the three. After my request for a better memory, one of the members told a story. “My friend wasn’t feeling right. Her energy was down. She visited her doctor and imagine her surprise when one of the tests revealed that she had only one half a brain. The other side never developed. She is an author and currently lives a well-adjusted and normal life.”

Wow – that brain is more flexible than we could imagine, as my good friend, Denise, demonstrated, when she "took on" her husband's plight, after he was left with brain damage due to a tumor. He was gone. The man she knew disappeared after they removed the tumor. She wanted him back. The doctors said there was no way. She found a way. She read through journals, sought out any shred of hope for mind regeneration, and, against all odds, she brought him back home to himself and to her. He has since authored four books. His doctors said he would never write, and certainly could not write poetry, and his memory would not return. Today he recites self-authored complex poems and is considered the resident poet at the spiritual center I attend.

Exercise is recommended for memory, but did you know that cross-lateral exercise can help with memory? Cross-lateral exercises are exercises that force the two sides of the brain to work together. Here’s a short and simple video with a few easy cross-brain training exercises: Cross-Laterals for Building Brain Connections.

One study found that speedily processing information appears to peak around age 18 or 19, then it starts to decline, while short-term memory continues to improve until around age 25, and then begins to decline at around age 35. That worked out well when people only lived to be 40, but now we live well into our nineties. If we plan to stay alert and to remember where we put our keys, it looks like the brain is going to need a little help. If you are more than 35 years old, it’s time to train that brain.
