  The Anne Report

Traveling Again

Dear ,

Today my husband and I are at Martin Dies Jr. State Park, camping in our RV. Jim and I are in love with camping. Before we bought the RV, we did our share of tent camping, but we decided to go big time. We are like two kids who play dress up or house. We get so excited about going, you would think we were going to Paris! The RV is our tiny house. We feel so cozy in our little vacation home, but I am happy that we have a bigger place to store our things and live in on a day to day basis. I have dreamed of many things in my life, and the RV thing was always on the list. Now I can cross it off my bucket list.

Spring is rocking where I live and I've been attending yoga classes at my local Hindu temple, the Hindu Temple of the Woodlands, TX. I love India, and the yoga classes provide a taste of India. I only have to travel 4 miles to get there. I used to frequently travel internationally when I was in my thirties. By the time I reached my mid-forties, I decided to stay home, do well-needed repairs on my home, and start an IRA. I lived in Memphis at the time and started participating in organizations that centered around other cultures. I joined Sister Cities and ultimately ended up with 30 Gambian dancers sleeping in my home, on the floor – a real taste of Africa. I worked with one of the leaders of the Moslem religion from Africa. I picked up the head of a country from the airport and transported him to his hotel. I met ambassadors who came to our city. I hosted regular people from other countries in my house. I housed gurus, a shaman, speakers, authors, and musicians. If I couldn't go to other countries, I found I could bring other countries to my doorstep. Fortune has smiled on me, but I also had to extend, use my imagination, and be on the lookout for the opportunities that allowed me to participate in cultural diversity, and for this I am grateful.

Until next week, this is the Anne Report.

The Mistaken Mystic

There was a young mystic who thought he was weird.
He sparkled in darkness; he had a grey beard.
He whispered in poems; he listened in rhymes;
his life was a mystery most of the time.
Then one day his sparkling saved a girl's life;
his poems made cheerful an old hermit's strife.
His grey beard was playground to fingers of babes,
and he felt the weirdness just slipping away.

Are you the mistaken mystic? Does your life touch more people and affect more situations than you know or give yourself credit for? Is it possible to measure your life from some not-so-standard standards?

For those who live life from the inner realms and less from the domain of accomplishment and success, it is tempting to take a stock of one's accomplishments through the lenses of the world's standards. They have some validity, but they are not the final record of accomplishment.

I suggest you write a Record of Accomplishment for your life. Don't record what you think of as your failures. You may, however, list things you've overcome, such as recovery from alcoholism. If you've learned from a mistake, then include it in your list, because when you learn from your mistakes, it then becomes an accomplishment.

Here's a list of things to include in your life's record.

  • Make a list of what you've accomplished in the physical world, such as degrees or learning to play the piano, ride a bicycle, act, do math or calculus, spell, etc. If you get creative and include things such as learning to talk and walk, you'll be surprised at your worldly accomplishments.
  • Make a list of the places you've traveled.
  • Make a list of the times you've helped others.
  • List the people who have passed through your life who left a lasting imprint on your soul. Reflect how you prospered from or grew from those relationships.
  • Find your own way of measuring your emotional growth. Be kind. List the ways you have changed emotionally through the years. What things used to send you through the roof and now don't bother you? How have you detached from drama?
  • Make list of your life skills. Have you learned to listen and give everyone time to speak? Have you learned to work for a team and not just for yourself?
  • What life-supporting things have you done for your body, such as exercise, diet, and giving yourself sufficient rest? Be specific about the lengths you have gone to to support your body.

Reciting your failures and judging yourself is emotional terrorism. It's time to be a mistaken mystic, not a mistake. Revamping your life story is just one way to make your life easier. It's time to climb the heights of your life to expose the depths of your being. If you do these steps, and measure your life from a holistic standard, you may find that your life has been and is just the way it should be.

Quotes

"If we simply allow ourselves to be fully aware of the experience or sensation we are having without struggling against it, the suffering or pain is gone. Most of the time, we are internally busy with a rejection of or attempt to manage the experience we're having. This internal activity is effortful and involves a tensing and pushing against something we're experiencing either externally or internally. This internal efforting is the true source of all our pain and suffering."
-- Nirmala

"When we feel anxious and upset, we can be sure we are in getting mode and that we are not getting what we want. Our desires are elusive and we fear that we won't get enough of "more." Our push for more is the synthetic journey that leads us away from our true destiny, and that destiny is love. It is not just a destiny; it is both the journey and the destination. Love is both the heart of life and the body as well. Love can only be received, experienced, and realized. It cannot be gotten."
-- Anne Sermons Gillis

"The gift of having little money brings us the privilege of not being able to buy all the stuff we don't need. It helps us become more creative in attracting and manifesting what we do need. It allows us to look beyond money as the only path to success, life, and happiness."
-- Anne Sermons Gillis

Heal Your Neck Now

About 16 years ago, I ruptured a disc in my neck. The pain was unbearable, but bear it I did. It came at a most unfortunate time. My husband had used the Law of Attraction to win an incredible all-expense paid vacation to the Cayman Islands. It was a go or lose it deal. I went regardless of the pain because I knew I would be hurting whether I was at home or on vacation. I hold fond memories of that trip and the memories center around the places we went and the people we met, not the pain. While there, I found a local chiropractor and visited his office every day. He couldn't do much because my neck was so inflamed. The inflammation needed to settle down before he could do anything to my neck, but his daily dose of empathy went a long way. He listened, made jokes, and gave me calcium tablets to relax me.

Unfortunately, this event left my neck with a little ongoing, nagging pain, and sometimes it is a big pain. While I have never been able to get rid of the pain entirely, I've found that I can manage it. I do a self-massage on my neck and also neck exercises. Having a tight neck and shoulders cuts of the energy to our heads It restricts the circulation to our brain, eyes, ears – essentially everything about the neck. I've found it very helpful to loosen up that area on a regular basis.

Here's a great video to help relax and energize that area. Its exercises we've probably all done, but Norman inspires me to do more than a few shoulder lifts. Thank you, Norman.
