  The Anne Report

Honoring Nature

Dear ,

I'm traveling back home from the Eco Spirituality conference in Wheaton, Ill. today. I'll tell you more about it next week. It was a conference on fostering a spiritual ecology with ourselves and the world. I'm into nature and it all makes sense, because I am a part of nature. One of my neighbors was talking about her dog and she remarked, "He's just an animal, and I'm not having an animal in my house." I didn't comment, but I was thinking, "What do you think you are? You are an animal."

Nature is alive; nature is conscious. Our current living conditions tend to keep us separate from nature. We try to control it. We mess it up. My husband recently told me about the invasive Texas cedar on a new homeowner's land. The homeowner asked an expert what he needed to get water back on his land. He was told to burn the cedars and plant native grasses, which he did. In a few short months, the water returned to the land and his ecosystem was restored.

When wolves were reintroduced in Yellowstone, the entire ecosystem, including the rivers, regenerated. This short video shows this astounding process. Please watch it. We are connected, and when a blade of grass is cut, the universe shakes.

That's it for the Anne Report.

Bad Things Do Happen to Good People
(And we are all good people.)

Dear Spirit,

Bad things happen to everyone. No one is exempt. In my younger days, I believed I was favored by God and that favor ensured a smooth ride. My behavior was exemplary. It was like a rewards program. I act right and nothing bad happens.

As I look back, I know I had an inkling that something was going to happen, but I just couldn't face the possibility that anything bad could happen to me. I thought positive thinking was an immutable law that would protect me from all harm.

I was 32. It was 9 PM when two men quietly rounded the corner. My inner voice said, "Throw your wallet in the car." I argued. "Why?" Too late. In a flash, one man held a gun to my head. He yelled, "Don't scream or I'll shoot." An inner voice emerged, "Scream; he will not shoot you." I cried out. The noise startled him, but he still grabbed my purse. I wouldn't let go. I definitely wasn't following inner guidance at this point! I had a large sum of money in my purse. I had not been able to reconcile my day end report, so I took the money. I would work with the numbers when I was less tired and would return the money, with the report, the next day. I fell to the ground and was physically bruised and scrapped as he dragged me.

They escaped with my purse and $600.00, which, at the time, was a fortune to me. I got a cash advance from my credit card to pay back my company. I thought I was protected from robbery, but I discovered "the bond" covered the clients, not the agents.

After the robbery, I worked through the loss of my naiveté, the loss of money, and the loss of feeling safe. There was a carefreeness that died. I went to my therapist. He was one of the greatest therapists alive, in my opinion, and I admired and trusted him. Our work was invaluable.

Next, I attended the EST training. It took place over two weekends, and I was able to express and face the fear surrounding the event, in addition to dealing with other deep-seated fears. I wasn't over the ordeal, but at least I wasn't teetering on the border of debilitating fear.

I was not angry with the robbers. I saw the event as a call for love. I prayed for them. I had received a letter the week before the robbery to tell me of a friend's robbery and how she handled it. Her letter provided a roadmap for me to spiritually deal with the situation. I was upset that the experience took away my freedom and indestructible sense of safety, but I never perceived myself as a victim. Even though I might have been a victim in the physical way, I didn't want to be an emotional victim. I wanted a free heart.

I was robbed again, in a way, in 2006, when I was in India. I was duped in a purchase. Fortunately, I got all my money back ($2,500.00) and met some wonderful people who helped me deal with the situation.

Even though I've made money when investing, I've also lost staggering amounts of money through investments. My friend says that when he makes money, he calls it an investment, but when he loses it, he calls it tuition. He comforted me after a big loss, telling me how he'd lost more than a million dollars during one market downturn. I felt better and not nearly as stupid!

As I look back, I see how many times I've received extraordinary protection against bad things that could have happened. I've lived with amazing grace by my side, but bad things still happened. Getting through the emotional intensity of heartbreaking events and facing the feelings of being out of control, stretched me in many ways. After working through the emotions, I'm grateful for the lessons. Life always guided me through troubled waters.

Regardless of the bad events that dot our lives, we can still live extraordinary, safe, and adventuresome lives. If we view these events as tuition to the school of life, we take away the power of these events to hurt us, and when we do, we find that life is always EZier and EZier.

Quotes

"Thought by thought we break the heart and soul. Our thoughts sentence us to a harsh reality. It's a false reality, but we believe it none-the less. We refuse to experience the love of the present because it can't be filtered through the logical mind. We prefer the familiar heartbreak because it's a known. The familiar provides a strange comfort."
-- Anne Sermons Gillis

"When we believe life is not on our side, we do everything in our power to prove it to ourselves and others. The belief becomes our "poor me" currency. The universe obliges to prove us right. The only way life is on our side is when we truly want it to be."
-- Anne Sermons Gillis

"If you can hold it in your head, you can hold it in your hand."
-- Bob Proctor

Anne's Affirmations

"The divine plan in my life includes peace, wellness, creativity, right action, abundance, and the power to extend love to all beings."

"My opinion matters. People enjoy listening to me. My voice counts."

The Living Book, by Anne Sermons Gillis

  • Suppose someone told you that you could change your life radically, for the better, if you spent just three minutes a day doing inner work? Would you believe it? Maybe not, but wouldn't it be worth an investment of three minutes a day to try it?
  • The Living Book offers just this. Devote three minutes a day to this process and your life will become a living testimony to the seed principle. A tiny seed can grow into a mighty tree, but it must be planted. Plant your daily seed for three short minutes and notice both subtle and miraculous changes in your life.
  • In addition to the daily practice, one can use the process when they are stumped or afraid or angry. This process transforms anger into love. When we plant seeds of light into our thoughts and emotional bodies, we move into higher frequencies of well-being.

What is an affirmation?

It is simply a thought. A thought can be constructive or destructive, but regardless of their persuasion, thoughts are powerful. The thoughts offered in this book are beneficial thoughts or affirmations. They can bring a much needed respite to a churning mind. Beneficial affirmations are training wheels for the mind; they offer a radical change from caustic mental programming. They are missives of well-being and the seeds we plant in the garden of awakening. They are tender thoughts of what might be.

Morning Ritual

Most of us have a morning ritual. We get up, brush our teeth, meditate, exercise, read inspirational material or the news, drink tea or coffee. Some rituals are intentional, while others are habitual. It's good to shake up things. New rituals, new habits, not only inspire us, they give us a sense of the power of new. New rituals are like an air freshener for life. The following set of actions, commitments, and activities offer more structure to our daily practices and help us to become servants of life. These suggestions range from the practical to the mystical.

  • When you first wake, stretch while you are in bed. Follow the lead of your cat or dog. They always stretch when they awaken. When we sleep, we move much less than normal. Stretching wakes up the muscles and releases accumulated toxins from inactivity. Bodies are supposed to be stretched before activity!
  • When you get out of bed, wash your face first thing. Wet your closed eye area, apply salt, and gently rub away the sleepy with the grainy salt. Rinse well. This helps the eyes stay healthy and discourages eye infection. Salt kills unwanted bacteria.
  • Brush your teeth and brush your tongue, or use a tongue scraper. Tongue scrapping removes bacteria, food debris, fungi, toxins, and dead cells from the surface of the tongue. Brushing helps but does not remove the bacteria.
  • When you are up, dressed, and ready to go, offer your services to the good of humanity. Address the Universe:

I am your arms, feet, and spokesperson. I am your boots on the ground. Direct me. I enter this day with a covenant for my highest good, and I am guided by my Source to act in accordance with this covenant. I assume that everything I do and every action I take is blessed beyond measure, for the highest good of all. I will be alert, breathe deeply, take care of my thoughts, and speak words of kindness and generosity to all. So be it.

Rituals help us lead intentional lives. When we add meaningful and health-filled rituals to our daily lives, and live with intention, we find that our lives are not only richer, they are also EZier and EZier. So stretch those muscles, wash those eyes, scrape that tongue, and become a living beacon of the unfolding power of good in your lives and in the lives of others.
