  The Anne Report

Returning Home

Dear ,

I feel like Jack Kerouac, because I’m on the road again. When you read this, we will be home, but as I write today, I’m juggling my iPad on my lap. It seems like only moments have passed since I wanted a laptop computer. Now, countless laptops, two iPads, and numerous smart phones later, I marvel at the swift passing of time and the advances I’ve seen in my lifetime. I remember mules, tobacco fields, and a time when almost all adults smoked cigarettes. I remember following the fog trucks as a child, while they sprayed the neighborhood with DDT to kill the misquotes. No wonder 1/3 of the women in our country get breast cancer.

When I was young, I had a bevy of small blankets. I would place them in a certain order before bedtime. There was not one favorite blanket; I had five little ones I clung to. As we grow into adults, we no longer drag around security blankets, but we secretly long for something that brings comfort and security. At some point we figure out that a comfortable bed, flowers in the yard, and even our favorite foods cannot provide the comfort we long for. We long for real security and endless safety, and find that the only place that kind of safety resides is on the inside. If that is true, then spending time in contact with who we are needs to be a priority. The faster we go in outer world, the less safe we feel, but the more we go to the inner realms, the slower things become and life then takes on a safe and timeless quality.

And now, back to the outer realms. We may get fired as grandparents because we kept the boys up too late last night. We received texts and a video of our sweet 3 year old grands, who have temporarily gone over to the dark side. It wasn’t a pretty picture.

I love seeing relatives and traveling, but getting home is always sweet. We enjoy our home and look forward to reconnecting with our Texas friends. That’s it for the Anne Report.

Seven Steps to EZ

I'm all over EZ. I've been deconstructing and reconstructing my ego for decades, and the following steps are vital in undoing to ego. I'm sure these ideas are not new to you, but too often we forget to utilize our innate wisdom. We are habituated to the day to day life we construct around unexamined suffering. If you want to decrease suffering and struggle while increasing EZ and aliveness, the following will assist you along the way.

  • Start your day with the idea that your day is going to be easy. Give up your mental burden when you awaken. Remind yourself that any sense of anticipated hardship is a story you've made up. If you are already suffering (AKA worry) over something that is not even happening, you are stuck in anticipatory struggle. Most burdens are mentally constructed; that means you can drop them. As the master said, "My yoke is easy; my burden light."
  • When you encounter people, give up the idea of trying to "get" anything from them – their time, attention, affection, favors. Trying to "get" takes mental effort. The best way to have an EZier relationship with a person is to think about what you appreciate about them. If you don't like them, think about how you like a facial feature or something they are wearing. Get creative; just be in the mode of giving, not getting. This mental trick is guaranteed to lift suffering.
  • Take care of your body during the day. Keep your shoulders back so you can breathe deeply. Older people breathe 50 gallons less of oxygen daily. Shallow breaths breed physical disease (long term lack of O2 to the cells) and create fear in the emotional body. Breathlessness feels like panic to our systems. Breathing fully brings relaxation and oxygen to the body and mind. It's an EZ fix.
  • Use the eight word miracle mantra: "Everything can be EZ or at least EZier." Use the mantra throughout the day to boost your mind and to dissuade your suffering habits.
  • Give up being a victim. Release the whiny thought, "Why is this happening to me?" and ask, "What can I do to make this situation EZier?" "Life doesn't happen to us; it happens through us."
  • Don't compare yourself to others. You are you, not someone else. Whenever we compare, one person always comes up short. We use comparison to create inferiority and superiority. Take this pledge: "Today I give up making myself better than or less than others."
  • Expect your good today. Know that it will come through as emotional emancipation and freedom from struggle. Hold onto each moment as your expectation of good permeates your consciousness. When you move through the day in delighted expectation, you drop the drama and surrender control. Control creates struggle - it requires an unnatural kind of effort. Anticipation requires letting go.

Use these seven steps daily and you will find that your life gets EZier and EZier.

Anne Quotes

"Empathy is not sympathy. Sympathy creates burden, but empathy opens the doors from which love flows. Challenging ourselves to move out of our comfort and convenience zones moves us into a place where we invite more than a few family members, colleagues, and friends into our hearts. As loves stirs and light shines into the hidden places and spaces in our lives and hearts, we gain immeasurably more than we have given to others."

"It is important to experience the innocence of our being. Guilt is the human imperative, and it is our soul’s mission to awaken from that condition into the experience of innocence. Until we uncover our hidden sense of guilt, we create situations to punish ourselves."

"Learning to surrender is paramount to the receiving process. It’s like drinking in the universe rather than chasing after it. Surrender is not resignation. It is a clear understanding that the egoic mind cannot effectively run our lives. We surrender when we stop our over-analysis, our scheming to make things happen, and our need to fix everything. It is the understanding that nothing is broken."

What is an affirmation?

It is simply a thought. A thought can be constructive or destructive, but regardless of their persuasion, thoughts are powerful. The thoughts offered in this book are beneficial thoughts or affirmations. They can bring a much needed respite to a churning mind. Beneficial affirmations are training wheels for the mind; they offer a radical change from caustic mental programming. They are missives of well-being and the seeds we plant in the garden of awakening. They are tender thoughts of what might be.

  Healthy Living

What Is Going Right?

Our physical health is an out picturing of our emotional health. Chronic stress is at the root of many diseases. Much stress comes from our environment, but the main stress in our lives flows from our minds. If we worry endlessly about life and see life as a problem to be solved, the stress will eventually catch up with us. When we awaken in the morning, our mind scans the day, looking for what is wrong. This is a heavy burden. The mind assumes that life is broken and it needs to be fixed.

Click the image to see a larger view.

Can we reverse that trend? What if we review each day and ask, “What went right today?” The lyrics in the song 1,000 Things Went Right Today say “Sometimes when our tire goes flat, it’s really hard to see, just how well it’s going with the other three.” What if we focused on the three good tires of life instead of the flat one?

We have become wrong machines. We live life in an ever-flowing river of struggle. Offering gratitude is one of the steps we can take to undo the influence of the cultural struggle philosophy, and just looking at all the things that go right is another. We must realize that valor does not lie in overcoming obstacles; it lies in not creating them in the first place. While much of life falls short of our expectations, we forget to see all the things that measure up or far exceed our expectations. Our body performs about 6 trillion simultaneous activities that keep us alive. That means if one trillion things go wrong, five trillion things are still going right! Let’s spin our minds in a different direction for the next few days and focus on what is right each day. I’m sure when we do that, life will be EZier and EZier.
